We recently connected with Ben Cantwell and have shared our conversation below.
Ben, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose emerged from a blend of my time in Marine Corps as an Infantryman, passion for art, and dedication to supporting fellow veterans. Art became my therapy and a means to connect with others, bridging the gap between veterans and civilians. Through collaborative projects and shared experiences, I’ve witnessed the power of creativity in fostering healing and camaraderie. My mission is to honor veterans’ sacrifices, raise awareness about their struggles, and build a supportive community that fights against veteran suicide. I like to have a few laughs along the way, too.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Drawing inspiration from American traditional tattoo style, my artwork carries a timeless quality that resonates with people from all walks of life. But beyond aesthetics, my art serves as a bridge, bringing together diverse communities under the common banner of appreciation for our country and its defenders.
Through my art, I’ve cultivated a vibrant community of supporters, including fellow veterans, tattoo enthusiasts, and patriotic individuals. It’s not just about the images I create; it’s about the connections they foster and the conversations they inspire.
In addition to original pieces, I offer art prints, shirts, and stickers, allowing people to carry a piece of my work with them wherever they go. This accessibility further strengthens the sense of belonging within the community I’ve built.
Currently, I’m working on an ambitious new series aimed at representing all military units and branches through my art. This project is not only a creative endeavor but also a deeply personal tribute to the brave men and women who have served our country. By honoring their sacrifices and celebrating their diversity, I hope to create a lasting legacy that brings people together and fosters a sense of unity and pride in our military heritage.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that were crucial in my journey from Marine Corps Infantryman to professional artist are discipline, adaptability, and networking.
Discipline: Set clear goals, create a routine, and commit to your craft every day. Consistency is key for steady improvement.
Adaptability: Embrace change, step out of your comfort zone, and see obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow.
Networking: Build relationships, attend events, and reach out to others for advice or collaboration. Cultivating connections can open doors and enrich your artistic journey.
For those early in their journey, prioritize these qualities, seek opportunities for growth, and remain dedicated to your passion and purpose. With perseverance and a willingness to learn, the possibilities are endless.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I rely on a few strategies to help me regain focus and perspective:
Take a break: Sometimes, stepping away from the situation for a short time can provide much-needed clarity. Whether it’s taking a walk, practicing mindfulness, or engaging in a hobby, giving myself permission to rest and recharge is essential.
Prioritize tasks: Breaking down overwhelming tasks into smaller, more manageable steps can make them feel less daunting. I prioritize my to-do list based on urgency and importance, focusing on one task at a time rather than trying to tackle everything at once.
Reach out for support: The veteran community is a beautiful place to exist. I’ve learned the importance of reaching out to friends, family, or fellow veterans when I’m feeling overwhelmed. Whether it’s seeking advice from fellow veteran artists, venting frustrations, or simply asking for a listening ear, knowing that I’m not alone in facing challenges can provide immense comfort and support.
Overall, it’s important to recognize when I’m feeling overwhelmed and to take proactive steps to address it. By implementing these strategies and prioritizing self-care, I’m better equipped to navigate challenges and maintain a sense of balance in my life.
