Meet Ben Copperwheat

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ben Copperwheat a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ben, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience stems primarily from my Mum, who has been an extraordinary role model throughout my life. Despite enduring significant hardships, including an abusive childhood, she has demonstrated remarkable strength and remained a constant source of support for both my brother and me. Her example has taught me that we can overcome even the most challenging circumstances.

Inspired by her perseverance, I’ve learned to push forward through my own struggles, whether they’re related to mental health, finances, or other obstacles. My artwork has become another vital source of resilience – it’s not just a creative outlet, but a wellspring of joy and motivation. Creating art helps me stay focused and positive, while also allowing me to share that happiness with others.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a visual artist with a passion for creating vibrant, expressive work across multiple mediums – from fine art and wearable pieces to interior concepts. My signature style combines screen printing, painting, and digital techniques to create pieces that burst with bold colors and graphic imagery.

What excites me most about my work is the ability to blur the lines between fine art and fashion, creating pieces that are both visually striking and wearable. My practice is deeply rooted in exploring color relationships and developing dynamic prints that tell a story through their bold motifs and energetic compositions.

Currently, I’m focused on expanding my digital presence through an enhanced website and online store to make my work more accessible to collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide. I’m particularly excited about an upcoming pop up shop at Syd Nicole (sydnichole.com), where I’ll be showcasing my latest collection of one-of a-kind blazers and fine artwork. These pieces represent a perfect fusion of my fine art background with wearable fashion, allowing collectors to quite literally wear a piece of art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three essential qualities that shaped my journey:

1. Perseverance has been my cornerstone quality. Through challenging times, I’ve remained committed to my career path in art and design, never wavering from my chosen direction. This steadfast dedication has contributed significantly to my current success and position in the field.

2. Adaptability and embracing change has proven invaluable. My willingness to make major life transitions – from London to New York City where I spent 15 years, and then to Savannah, Georgia six years ago – demonstrates how being open to new opportunities and environments can enrich both personal and professional growth.

3. Technical expertise, particularly in digital design and screen printing, has been fundamental to my career advancement. While I built a strong foundation during my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, my industry experience, especially at Calvin Klein in New York, greatly enhanced these skills.

Advice for those early in their journey:

For perseverance: Start by setting clear, long-term career goals and remind yourself of them during challenging periods. Build a support network of mentors and peers who can encourage you during difficult times.

For adaptability: Begin with small changes to build your comfort with transition. Take on varied projects, collaborate with different teams, and remain open to opportunities outside your comfort zone, even if they seem daunting at first.

For technical skills: While formal education provides an excellent foundation, actively seek hands-on experience through internships, freelance work, or professional roles. The combination of academic learning and practical industry experience will deepen your expertise and understanding of your craft.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

As a textile print designer and artist, I’m actively seeking collaborative opportunities. My past collaborations with fashion and interior designers have proven highly successful and mutually beneficial. I’m particularly interested in connecting with:

1. Fashion and interior designers who are looking to incorporate unique textile prints and art into their work
2. A business-minded partner who could complement my creative skills and help grow the commercial aspects of my practice

My experience has shown that the best creative partnerships emerge when each person brings their distinct talents to the table. While I excel in textile design and artistry, I’m looking for partners whose skills can enhance and expand these capabilities.
