We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ben Mirabelli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I haven’t really overcome it, it’s a constant battle. I combat this by surrounding myself with folks that are supportive of my works and endeavors. These folks always affirm for me, mostly through their support that I do indeed produce quality creations and I am indeed, worthy.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve always loved art, from a young age until the present. I think when I fianlly latched onto it and figured out there was something I could be “good at” it really gaver my life a new focus. Recently (the last 10 years) I’ve been selling my 2d art t conventions and the like. This has given me a huge confidence boost and much needed motivation to make new work.
I’ve recently , within the last 2 years, delved into 3d digital sculpting and 3d printing. This has given me a whole new avenue to persue and new skills to drive both my illustration and my emergence into local retail spaces,
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience- The world will try to knock you down and will, over and over. Look to the folks that can help you back up and TAKE THEIR HELP.
Creativity- Always looking for new ways to be creative, channeling ideas into action is ultra important.
Follow through- Making sure to see something all the way through. Starting a bunch of projects only carries the burden of creation without the satisfaction of a job well done.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My father instilled a solid work-ethic in me. Throughout my childhood, I watched him strive and make and create all sorts of things with all sorts of outcomes, but he taught me about the value of usin your wits and your hands to overcome obstacles.
My Mother taught me how to care. Her love resonated with me and helps me pass that on to others, wether it my own wife and child, or my high school students.
