We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Benga Tribe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Benga, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I like this question; I see beyond me just being in the room with anybody like me. When I walk into those type of rooms and I begin to address something I am consistently reminded “everything is pulling me towards the greatest outcome” so I perform like it. Nobody knows who you are behind close doors and the many battles you’ve faced. I only see myself growing from my worst so I am confident in who I am and who I am becoming.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am Benga Tribe, an Artist, Brand and Entrepreneur I create/curate a handful of different things. I have always done my best to host and perform a few different events every year to sell merchandise from my upcoming brand, or reach my music enthusiasts with my heavy basses, drums, and melodies. I am very family oriented I do not come from the greatest upbringing and I am consistently making choices that will yield a greater generation wealth. Before taking music seriously I went to the military out from high school. My goal was to get my family more stable quick because my mom was suffering from an ailment since my junior year. Now we have a house where my mom and part of my family lives and visits. I am an artist that loves to travel, I just left LA last month and I also did a show with Trap Chi while finishing my new album “Giant Over Descend” released recently 6/24/24. I started creating this album in 2023 I was recording heavily amongst my travels. I loved my time in Jamaica and it is was where I shoot my new music video “Stay Offline,” with Sunburst Films 9 months ago. A few months later to start this year I spent a month in the Bahamas fasting, working out, writing. While there I met Terry Brown an amazing filmer and entrepreneur who helped me shoot “Patterson Ave” also on my recent album Giant Over Descend which will be released closer to the close of the summer. I enjoy the process of making music from feeling out the beats, scripting my life and words into visuals, putting my clothing together to trigger reactions, I believe an artists job could be never ending some days so loving your process is important. I record 80% of my music in the house or while traveling to capture or create a moment whichever happens first. Outside of making music I like to paint and cook and I’m working on showcase to display both. I also spoke to someone in LA at an event about my artwork being in an exhibit so more information should be coming soon! I’ve delayed my official clothing brand release for a few years due to the news, quality and the economy but once it feels right I’ll be actively releasing a wave of my items. I disappear to create from time to time but I do like coming back to my neighborhood to create and film on the same blocks I grew up on that always feels very special. I am hoping to have more access to help my community even more soon with art and bridging gaps that need to be filled for creatives.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’ve been told over the years I am very confident, versatile and resilient. My confidence has always helped me move without a doubt and repeatedly always doing actions that will make you better, makes you better! The process will not be easy to repeat and knowing that on the days I am in the mud again I am still crawling through. I watch a lot of anime so never giving up is important lesson to learn because in the eye of defeat or failure your next move can take you somewhere you never imagined. Until the end God has put us here for a purpose so I will walk through the fires unscathed as I do hope for the others following the same path. You will develop and grow through the journey so be intense, intentful, think longevity, don’t stress the temporary and applaud yourself for doing the work!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to collaborate or partner up with people and companies doing tours with music entertainers. I was watching a vlog recently with Wiz Khalifa and I see his recent tour partnership has been a pretty good experience. I’d definitely like to team up with the right team to travel and perform more as long as it is mutually beneficial. I can be reached through instagram @bengatribe or email [email protected]
