We were lucky to catch up with Benjamin Sklar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Benjamin, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I grew up as the youngest in my family, with an older brother who was four years ahead of me. Spending time with him and his friends taught me an important lesson: even though they were older, they were still figuring things out – just as I was. Realizing that they didn’t have all the answers helped me see that if I treated myself (and allowed them to treat me) like an equal, I could step up and contribute confidently. I started speaking up more, asking questions, and sharing my ideas. Over time, that helped me build real self-esteem. Essentially, I learned that confidence isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about having the courage to be yourself and trust in your ability to grow.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Jewish-Mexican corporate lawyer from Houston, Texas, who played football at Amherst College and served in the Israeli Paratroopers, and those experiences gave me a love for teamwork, grit, and helping others tackle challenges head-on. Now, I channel that mindset into guiding founders through every step of building a successful business – whether it’s setting up their corporation, raising equity, or going public. I know how overwhelming legal hurdles can feel, so I focus on keeping things clear, approachable, and rooted in real-world experience. At the end of the day, I want to see entrepreneurs thrive, and I’m rolling out programs and partnerships to make sure they have the resources and support they need to bring their visions to life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience is huge. Playing football at Amherst and serving in the Israeli Paratroopers taught me that setbacks and challenges are going to happen – it’s how you respond that really counts. For those just starting out, I’d say put yourself in situations that stretch you, whether that’s tackling a new project at work or trying a new workout regimen. It’s uncomfortable, but learning to push through tough moments will serve you well in any field.
Relationship-Building has also been key. Being from a multicultural background and constantly finding myself in new environments – from Houston to college to the military – showed me the value of connecting with people on a personal level. My advice: take genuine interest in others. Whether you’re meeting classmates, colleagues, or potential mentors, ask questions, listen, and see how you can support them. Those authentic relationships become a powerful source of knowledge and support.
Lastly, Strategic Thinking has helped me tremendously in navigating legal complexities and advising founders. For anyone early in their journey, I recommend reading widely – business books, case studies, even biographies of leaders you admire – and then talking about what you’ve learned with peers or mentors. Discussion sharpens your understanding and helps you see real-world applications. Over time, you’ll naturally develop a knack for spotting opportunities, anticipating challenges, and planning for the big picture.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always on the lookout for collaborators who share a passion for helping founders build and scale their ventures. That might include entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, financial advisors, or even fellow lawyers who specialize in complementary areas, like intellectual property or tax law. Ultimately, if you value teamwork, creative problem-solving, and a hands-on approach, I’d love to connect.
