Meet Benjy Bradshaw

We were lucky to catch up with Benjy Bradshaw recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Benjy, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

My optimism has been with me since a very young age. Growing up, my parents encouraged me to live in my truth and enjoy every aspect of life. We found laughter in the little things and my parents insisted that my siblings and I find time to run free in our creativity.

Over the years, there have been many days and nights where I found myself at a crossroads of going to a dark place or light place. Ultimately, I believe optimism is a choice so I often have to consciously reposition myself onto the road towards the light. Feelings like fear, self-doubt, anger, and disappointment can happen naturally, but I’d rather choose to spend my time elevating my awareness to all the beauty this world offers. It’s just a matter of actively re-training minds towards happiness and not sadness, and to be an active participant in love and not hate.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am an Independent Recording Artist. I am a photographer. I am a creative director. I am a designer and stylist. I am a makeup artist. I am a videographer. I am a web designer. I am just a really creative person.

At the heart of who I am is a person living out their fantasy. Most of what I do creatively is actually a complete expression of myself.

The beauty I find in performance is that I am able to do all these things at once. From creating and writing stories through my music to dressing up to become Benjy Bradshaw the artist. Through dance, electronic, and pop music, along with makeup and fashion, I am able to become the embodiment of who I am. It has been an honor to have been nominated three times now for an NYC Glam Award – an award ceremony recognizing NYC nightlife.

Furthermore, the musical realm has always been an escape for me. In music, I can be whoever I want to be. Music is free-forming, endless, and to me, it’s total freedom. My track, “Bring Me Higher,” with MicFreak and DJ Spen on QU3 Records, for example, takes me to a fantasy place immediately – it’s like a rocket ship to a discotheque in the sky. I love creating experiences through my music and everyday I am excited at the thought of what thing I can do next.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

To me, the three most important qualities or skills one can have is 1) creativity in mind/body/spirit, 2) compassion for oneself and others, and 3) the ability to never stop. Let me explain what I mean.

Creativity In Mind, Body, and Spirit.

I believe creativity is the most important skill/trait to acquire. A creative person can navigate through any situation. Not only can one be creative through the act of creating art, a product, or a brand, but one can use their creativity to approach life situations.

Compassion For Yourself and Others.

Life is hard when you don’t have compassion for others, but even harder if you don’t have compassion for yourself. None of us are perfect. We are going to make mistakes and may offend someone. Plus, we won’t always make the right choices. However, it’s first important to forgive oneself for any mishaps. The beautiful thing is that we can learn and move on. Also, you never know what your neighbor is going through. I try to always remind myself that we are all fighting private battles.

Never Stop Living Your Passion.

Never give up. Never count yourself out. Live your passion and do it at your own pace. Your full being is a gift – enjoy it and share with others. I do this by creating daily, even if it’s just 30 minutes.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

I feel that the possibilities of the world are too large to limit oneself with just strengths you know. In fact, I can’t think of a profession or vocation that only involves one skill. As an Independent Recording Artist, I have no choice but to strive for greatness in so many areas – visuals, self-promotion, music production, vocal work, songwriting, instrumentation, stagecraft, dance, movement, creative direction, business awareness, legal knowledge – the list goes on and on. The same thing goes on in any field. Yes, I think it’s smart to focus on one main goal/skill, but do not stay put. Learn as much as you can about the various aspects of what you love to do and then always push yourself to be the best you can be. Once again, I believe creativity is that skill that easily translates to anything. If you are a creative thinker, you can make any situation work for you.
