Meet Bereniz Velazquez

We recently connected with Bereniz Velazquez and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Bereniz , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I believe it is human nature to be afraid, to overthink and to always hesitate if the decisions you are making are correct or wrong. It is safe to say that I had always been the one to overthink and to ask everyone if my path fro advice in any decision making. But as I got older and experienced more job rejections, bad decision making, and a lot of overthinking. is what started giving me the lesson that taking risk is actually what makes you wiser. Taking risks is now what I enjoy doing because I always ask myself “if I don’t do it? will I ever know if this was meant for me?” and you will never know if something was meant fro you or not if you don’t take the risk.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Bereniz is a Houston-born Mexican American Graphic Designer. Her process includes expressive typography and experimental design. She focuses on brand identity, packaging design, and motion graphics. Through these mediums, they push the boundaries and standards of design today. They believe that design should be impactful, intelligent, and inclusive. In their free time, they love to workout, try new food, and build upon their personal graphic design business.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Graphic Design is not what people think we do “oh you just draw” “oh you paint stuff”. graphic Design takes courage, understanding, risk taking, research, and more. A graphic designer is always learning, they never finish picking up on trends learning new skills and expanding their knowledge. Learning the fundamentals to graphic design is ideal such as, color theory, typography, digital software and such. Experimentation/risk taking is also something that a graphic designer should be able to take on. That is what helps graphic design expand and be diverse. As a graphic designer we are here to make an impact a change through design.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mom whom has been both my dad and mom, she is my role model and my idol. Being raised by a single mother who once was an immigrant, from a young age, made me realize I would have to step up to the plate in my life. To elaborate, I will need to carry my weight financially as my mother will not be able to continue to do so for me as she has done. Now, I know this will not happen overnight, having a hardworking mother is what has encouraged me to succeed to be independent. Thank you, will never be enough to express how grateful and blessed I am for my mother. My mother has been able to aid me with my school tuition and school related expenses since she enrolled me into school from a young age. She has raised me to be the women I am today and the successful designer. it is my turn now to take care of my mother. One of my goals is to open my own Marketing Design firm, I slowly have begun placing myself out there as a freelance with my small business.
