We were lucky to catch up with Bernadette Mitchell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bernadette, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my parents. They worked hard and let us know that if we wanted certain things, we had to work for it. Trust me, nothing was handed to me. Sometimes I thought it was not fair what they were teaching. As I got older, I understood. Doing well in school, succeeding in work to obtain raises. Now as an entrepreneur, and massage therapist, no one just fell on my table because they knew I was a massage therapist. I have to market and advertise every day. Not some days…EVERY DAY!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a State of Maryland Licensed Massage Therapist. I have a wellness studio in the historic district of Mt. Vernon in Baltimore City. I am excited to help people with chronic pain get back to having quality of life. Imagine having a client come into the suite in pain with a cane and they feel so good after the session that I had to run outside before they drove off because they forgot the cane! Too funny!
I specialize in medical massage which includes treating pain and dysfunction in addition to pre- and post-operative care and treatment for cosmetic and other surgeries. In addition, we provide esthetics (facials/waxing), body treatments, community auricular acupuncture, integrative medicine and wellness to include: pain management, lose weight, improve your health and manage stress and IV hydration bar!
What’s New? Community Auricular Acupuncture on the first Saturday of each month from 11:00 – 2:00 pm. No appointment needed.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1, Perserverance – no matter what may happen and trust me a lot can (Murphy’s Law)! Just keep going. Surprisingly, everyone cannot see your vision or your dreams no matter how many times you may share it with them. That too was a part of what my parents taught me. If you want it, go get it because it is not going to fall into your lap! I know you may be tired and it seems like it’s never going to happen – just keep going!
2. Having faith – while others may seek faith blindly, I have always sought it based on what I see. I have seen others try and try again until things came to fruition for them. Seeing that, why wouldn’t it work for me too? So, my faith is based on a small quote by Jessie Jackson…”if you can see it, you can achieve it.”
3. Education, education, education – educate yourself in whatever you seek. Knowledge has power. The more I have worked with clients with various illnesses, the more I sought to educate myself on how I can help them succeed in getting better. …and they have!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My mentor, Robert White, DIM. He has a no-nonsense approach to the industry and helped me to establish that sense for myself. We confide in each other about our various challenges in the industry and he provides his best educational response and personal experiences. He is the best at what he does in his practice and has encouraged me to identify myself as such as well. Some may say this is arrogance, but this is confidence! Confidence in your ability to be the best massage therapist I can be. To quote Michelle Obama on success, she indicates: “Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the differences you make in people’s lives. As a massage therapist, this is what I do best through therapeutic touch…make differences in people’s lives.
My first thought is husband, Adrian. He was there with me before I started on my massage journey and has encouraged me along the way. He listened to me as I talked about my dreams and goals and is now able to see my dreams come to fruition. He would not let me fall when things got tough along the way. He’s my hero!
