Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beth Hardy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Beth, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
In my early years as a birth doula, imposter syndrome was a constant companion. Even after my training, I often questioned whether I knew enough or was experienced enough to guide families through such an important moment in their lives as welcoming a new baby. Over time (and through many births) I learned that confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything. It comes from being present, adaptable, and deeply committed to the families I serve.
Fifteen years later, I’ve supported hundreds of families and now lead a thriving agency of more than 15 doulas. I’ve learned to trust my knowledge, intuition, and leadership. When self-doubt still shows up, I take it as a reminder that I care deeply about doing this work well, not as evidence that I’m unqualified.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the Founder and CEO of Heart Tones Birth Services, a birth and postpartum doula agency based in Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m a creative entrepreneur with a deep passion for supporting people through life’s most transformative experiences. My work is rooted in compassion, presence, and empowerment.
Through Heart Tones, I lead a team dedicated to providing exceptional care to growing families. As a birth and postpartum doula, my approach is grounded in empathy and creativity. I guide clients through the emotional, physical, and spiritual shifts of pregnancy, birth, and the early weeks of parenting.
With a calming presence and a commitment to personalized support, I help parents feel seen, held, and confident in their journey. My style blends intuitive care with evidence-based knowledge, giving families the nurturing support they need to thrive. Under my leadership, Heart Tones Birth Services has grown into a trusted resource known for its warm, inclusive, and professional care throughout the Salt Lake City community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Leadership: Building a team of 15+ doulas required learning how to support others while stepping out of the day-to-day hands-on work.
2. Communication: Whether it’s with clients, doulas, or medical providers, clear and kind communication keeps everything flowing.
3. Systems thinking: Putting structure behind the passion. Having processes, policies, and boundaries was what turned my solo doula practice into a sustainable agency.
Advice:
You don’t have to master leadership or business skills overnight. Start small. Lead by example. Communicate openly, even when it’s uncomfortable. And when your business outgrows your old systems, take that as a good sign! It means you’re ready for the next level.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who’s invested in their own wellbeing and isn’t afraid to take an active role in their care. They set boundaries, ask questions, and know what feels right for them. They surround themselves with people who lift them up and create a strong, supportive circle for this new chapter.
Their partner is “all in” too, ready to bring the calm, the humor, the encouragement, and the hands-on support that makes birth feel like a true team effort.
Together, they approach birth as something they’re doing *with* their care team, not something that’s being done *to* them. They’re curious, engaged, and open-hearted, which makes supporting them such a joy.
