We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beth Hutson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Beth , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
We’re all creative by nature, but it’s something we must nurture and protect. I think it’s important to take note of the things that move you. Are you most creative when you’re well-rested? Does music inspire you? I personally keep my creativity going by allowing myself to try new things. Building a healthy confidence around your creativity is essential, but having fun with it is equally as important.
I also think creativity needs space, I try to stay mindful about not overbooking myself, so I have pockets of time to dream, travel, visit a museum or discover new music. It’s also critical to practice self-care. I personally feel so much more inspired when I don’t miss my nature walks. Are you well-nourished and hydrated? Are you getting good sleep? These things all contribute to building an environment to support creativity. Another thing to consider is who you surround yourself with. Are you passionate about your projects and do you have trust and mutual respect with your collaborators? For me, being intentional about these things helps build creativity too.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
With over 20 years as a lifestyle publicist, no two days are ever the same. I write and secure news stories for national brands in beauty, fashion, wellness, food & beverage and arts & entertainment. I also consult these brands on communication strategies. My work as a publicist has lead me to entertainment opportunities, where I collaborate with networks on everything from show development, casting and content creation. On the design side, I lead a stellar team of designers from naming companies, to creating brand identities and strategic advertising campaigns. I assist my amazing photographer husband on shoots for a wide range of clients. On any given day, I’m responsible for creative direction, styling and lighting.
As an executive producer, I direct an incredible video team that creates beautiful content from 15-second commercials to podcasts, documentaries and other pieces for television. I also write on occasion for different publications.
When I’m not doing that, I’m mixing zero proof cocktails and advocating for more delicious alcohol-free beverages in the market through @theelevatedelixir. I’m also an executive board member for @filmfortworth. But my most important job is mommin’ two incredible children, Christian & Avery. In short, I’m thankful to be living my passion.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Things that have been impactful in my journey have been listening to my intuition, even when it doesn’t make sense. I believe that It’s put there to guide you. Tapping into and understanding my deep feelings helps me to work towards alignment in all areas of my life. Also, relationships are everything. It’s important to be dependable, trustworthy and safe for others and to keep people in your life who make you feel the same way. And finally, don’t be afraid to set healthy boundaries. I find that when I do, I feel much better and so do my relationships.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Well of course, my family! But outside of that, I’ve really enjoyed working with a health coach. My functional wellness practitioner, Dr. Julie Kennedy of Seed Wellness Co. has helped me look at all areas of my health and given me tools to improve my nutrition, mood, energy levels and decrease stress. When I consistently make time for the right type of self-care, the quality of my life is dramatically improved. It has a positive impact on my creativity and relationships too!
