We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bethany Peterson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bethany below.
Hi Bethany, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I think purpose is such an interesting thing in life. When people talk about finding your purpose or doing something you’re passionate about I find it interesting because I feel like it’s an ever changing thing.
Purpose or passion isn’t always there on its own. It’s not like I woke up one day and decided to start a beauty business but I did know that I always wanted to be my own boss from a young age. As I grew into my teens years and really enjoyed doing my hair and makeup i decided to go to cosmetology school. I picked it up very quickly but never really landed where I wanted to be in the salon world. Eventually I was introduced to lash extensions and that grew into me owning a very successful lash studio.
Life continued to move me onto new things and I now own a DIY Lash brand. I greatly enjoy the beauty industry but I don’t believe beauty is my passion I think people are, and finding solutions for them. It’s part of what makes starting new businesses so much fun for me is knowing I’m creating a solution for people in the same situations I’ve been in. I’m passionate about serving people, I’m passionate about building women up and helping them become better versions of themselves and I feel that I’ve done that through different avenues throughout my career. How I found my passion was by life experiences that showed me what I valued and using the tools I worked with best to help fulfill that passion.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
It’s funny because I’ve always loved the beauty industry and getting to create with people being the focus but I also love helping women feel better about themselves. I worked in salons as a hairdresser for many years, I’ve always done makeup and was a bridal MUA and Stylist for several years and eventually I became a lash artist and came to really love lashes.
I owned a lash studio for many years and now I own a DIY Lash business. I absolutely love the connections I’ve made so far because I do it for the people. I do it for all the women out there who are in similar places of life that I am. It’s hard as a woman to have to give up a lifestyle that you’re used to. When you’ve been getting lash extensions for 10+ years you get really used to getting that time away and you get really used to how you look. When you can’t maintain it for whatever reason whether it’s financially or time or both whatever it is it’s always a bummer to have to break up with your lashes and I know how that feels. I was in that moment of “D” all of the above and I wanted an alternative that filled that need and looked the way I was used to looking and I knew there was no way I was the only person out there experiencing the same thing.
So I created Revel Lash, lashes that mimic the look of lash extensions. Volumes that actually look like volumes, or wispys that actually look wispy, you get the point. I’m sure you know there’s already plenty of other lash brands out there and most of them offer very natural styles which is great because there’s lots of people that want that look but there’s also plenty of people who want something more so that’s what I did.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Obviously having so much experience in the beauty industry and specifically the lash industry was very beneficial to me. It allowed me knowledge of what styles people already enjoyed and what they look for in a lash so I had a great starting point of how to really analyze the different qualities of a lash and how it would affect the look.
Owning a business prior taught me a lot about the inner workings of a business, different licenses and legal backend stuff that no one wants to do. There’s actually even more that you have to do for an online business which was a learning curve for sure but at least having some experience prior was really helpful and I think made it less intimidating.
I’ve always wanted to own a business and I think there’s a lot of people out there who dream of it but are afraid to make the jump. You hear it time and time again, every successful person out there also has a list of failures. The difference between you and them is that they kept trying. They took what they learned and they just applied it to their next venture, they didn’t allow failure to define their success or hold them back. They knew they just had to keep moving forward and they didn’t make decisions out of fear. If there’s anything I could recommend it’s not never make decisions out of fear, and to persevere but know what you’re willing to risk and when it’s logically time to stop and move on to the next. Don’t waste your time but don’t be to hasty to give up.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely. I feel like I am always open to collaborating with like minded people. I love the community aspect this business as opened me up to and I really enjoy collaborating with other creators and business owners.
We have a portion of our page that allows people to sign up as affiliates and we really don’t have a lot of qualifications, we also have a rewards program and we allow people to do both. Ultimately if you’re someone who loves our product and wants to talk about it I want you to be shown appreciation for that and giving you ways to earn free product and get discounts is the easiest way to reciprocate. My favorite thing is when someone messages me or comments on how the LOVE THE LASHES or that they’ve tried a bunch of brands and are so thankful they’ve found mine. It literally brings me to tears sometimes because it reminds me that all the work is worth it.
I am absolutely open to having a business partner, someone who has strengths that are different then mine or has experience growing an online business who is well versed in brand development and marketing who knows how to identify and speak to an audience, who can create strategy for successful growth. I think the right partnership can be very fruitful and it’s just a matter of finding the right person to make that happen.
