Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bethi Lewis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bethi, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever had any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I go to the water. I will find a spot to sit near a lake or a river and I watch and listen to the melody it sings as it goes flows. It reminds me of the Bible in Genesis 1:2 that says that “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” I am often inspired to write after times with Him by the water.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I sing an eclectic mix of folk, rock, country and gospel music. I love being able to use my gift wherever I can. I am also a songwriter and have many original songs that I want to share with the world. I play in Farmer’s markets, bars, jails, parades, ballgames, churches and homes. I love sharing my brand of music with the world.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’ve been singing since before I could walk. I’ve sang in different styles and groups over the years and what matters most is that I keep singing. Being persistent has allowed me to hone my skills and my music.
I’ve always loved the history of country music and the stories that they represent. History is a huge inspiration especially in my song, “Run, Rebel, Run.” It’s a ballad with a bit of history and a bit of tall tales, just like my papa would have told.
I’ve always loved meeting new people and learning their stories. This has allowed me to make connections and find new places to play!
The best piece of advice that I have is to make all of the friendships and connections that you can. Constantly branch out to find new places and new people that you can grow community with.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The hardest part of what I do is that it often feels like I’m spinning my wheels. I want to be able to sing and play for people who will appreciate my sound. I am looking for places and people who will appreciate the love and care that I put into my music. I am currently looking for a place to record my first full studio album!
