Meet Betsy Allen-Manning

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Betsy Allen-Manning a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Betsy, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I remember one year getting hired to give a keynote speech in front of 350 doctors. While prepping for the event, I sat with my husband and told him that I would be the only one there without a Ph.D. after my name, and I was starting to feel unqualified for this audience. Then he reminded me of a skillset I had spent years developing that they often lacked. This skill would help them relate to their patients better, and retain them longer. The skill that I spent years studying and becoming certified in is, Human Behavior/People Skills. My husband helped me realize that I could help those doctors develop the #1 skill that determines 85% of our success in life. Since then, I have applied the same steps to master leadership & workplace culture to help businesses become a ‘Destination Workplace’, so they can attract & retain talent in this hyper-competitive marketplace.

I’ve learned that the keys to overcoming imposter syndrome are…
1. Invest in becoming the best at what you do. Research, study, interview others, and never stop trying to become qualified for your job.

2. Approach your project with a ‘service’ mindset. When your aim is to serve, you remove the attention from yourself and place it on those who can benefit from what you’re offering.

3. Prepare. When you’ve prepared and practiced you don’t have to worry about whether you’re good enough or not. You can simply show up and share your God-given gift with the world!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 qualities that have helped me succeed are: 1. WORK ETHIC. I believe that our efforts will be blessed when we are willing to work hard for what we want.
2. RESILIENCE. I can’t count the number of times I’ve failed or had to start over from scratch, but I CAN tell you that I never let it stop me. Life WILL throw you curve balls. Your job isn’t to avoid them. It’s to learn how to hit them.
3. SERVANT’s HEART. Zig Ziglar once said, “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help other people get what they want.”

My greatest advice to those on their journey to success is this… Remember the 3 H’s of Success:
1. Stay HUMBLE because you may not always be on top once you get there.

2. Stay HUNGRY. Read books in your field. Interview the best of the best. Develop & update skills often. If you don’t, you get complacent and will lose your sense of purpose.

3. HELP others. I guarantee someone helped you get to your next level, so volunteer to be that person for someone else.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
2020-2021 hit me hard. I didn’t let it stop me in business, but I did allow it to affect my mental health. In 2023, I decided I was going to master ‘walking & living in peace.’ I read the Bible and other books on mental health for 1 year to learn how to live a more peaceful life.

The 3 Great lessons I learned were:
1. Peace is something you have to want. If you don’t want it, anxiety, fear, anger, or depression WILL win.

2. Peace is a choice. It’s not something that comes naturally to us so when something upsets you, in that moment you have a choice – react poorly or respond with peace. Peace is something you have to work to maintain by choosing it over the other emotions that fight for your attention.

3. Choose your battles wisely. One of my biggest lessons last year was that not every battle is worth fighting, because if you try and fight them all, you will be too tired to fight the ones that actually matter.
