Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Bev with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Growing up in a small farming community, work ethic is deeply ingrained in the fabric of daily life. The values of hard work, dedication, and perseverance are not just principles but practical necessities for survival and success in the agricultural lifestyle. Individuals in such communities often rise early to tend to crops and livestock, facing the unpredictable challenges of weather and seasons. The workday extends well beyond standard hours, reflecting a commitment to the land and livelihood. Although I did not live on a farm, many of my friends did, and I saw and experienced it firsthand. I worked several jobs while in high school getting up at 4 am to waitress in a cafe where locals gathered before tending chores, I worked on farms in the bean fields and corn fields, so I experienced it from a young age.

There is a strong sense of interdependence and collaboration, where neighbors often come together for barn raisings or harvests, exemplifying the collective spirit that defines the community. Respect for the land and understanding and emphasizing sustainability and stewardship.

In this setting, work is not merely a means to an end but a way of life, fostering resilience, resourcefulness, and a profound connection to the environment. The work ethic in small farming communities reflects a harmony between humanity and the land, with a recognition that diligent effort today yields prosperity tomorrow.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities, skills, or areas that most impacted my journey were, first and foremost, the ability to network and get to know other people. The skill of learning about others helps you help yourself more than most people realize, especially in the music industry. I arrived in Nashville not knowing my role in this industry, but I knew I wanted to work in the music business. I did not sing or write songs, but my passion was music. I relied on my skills in photography and interviewing, which I had done in prior positions with other professions, and slowly gained the trust of labels, publicists, and management. I kept my eyes open and ears perked to learn the professionalism needed to build my future. I was willing to try new things and learn from them, and expand on the opportunities they offered. My willingness to do all these helped me find my place in the industry.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
When asked who has been most helpful, the answer is myself. As a female, there are always hurdles to overcome. As someone who started on her own in her late 30s in a new role in a city without having a college degree to open doors and provide guidance or an internship. My experience and willingness to learn and get into the trenches, and prove my abilities was what helped me develop the skills and qualities needed to be a success in the roles I took that led to where I am now.
