Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Beverly Mercer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Beverly, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose, quite by accident. When I saw on Facebook that 33 puppies were being put to sleep at the Memphis shelter that day, simply because they had a stuffy nose.
I ran to the shelter and got 11 of them. All I could fit into my SUV.
That was my entrance into dog rescue.
Once I got them healthy, I had to find them homes.
It literally was the blind leading the blind but somehow, because of kind people, who wanted to help, all 11 puppies found great homes.
Well, actually 9 found another home …. I kept two.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I save dogs. As many as I can. Homeless street dogs. Dogs in the shelters about to be euthanized. Anyone that needs help, we try to help. We can’t save them all but we can try.
And now, more recently, I have a new organization aimed at getting to the root of the problem of dog overpopulation.
Free spay & neuter clinics.
“This Is Memphis Rescue” is a new organization developing a plan to offer free vaccinations, microchips and sterilization to low income communities in the Memphis area.
Communities, for many reasons are unable to get their pets, the care they need. And deserve.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I 100% believe people can achieve anything. Absolutely anything.
Set your goals and everyday, get one step closer to achieving them. It may take a while but you will get there. Stay true to yourself.
Because of my background in advertising, I understood how important the presentation of the dogs were. A simple photo can mean the difference between a dog finding a home or never finding a home.
That’s all people have to go on – photos. Presenting the dogs at their most adorable was a must.
Commitment to finding the dogs the best homes for them. Maybe not the first home that came along but the best. For their happiness. Even if that meant they would have to stay longer at the rescue.
