We recently connected with BiCoastal Pack and have shared our conversation below.
Hi BiCoastal, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Strong work ethic is something that I have been privy to since an adolescent. I’ve adapted my work ethic from my mother who is a single parent that worked a full-time and part-time job for most of my childhood. Good work ethic is not just showing up daily, but also about being an asset to your team along with going above and beyond what is expected of you. As a designer my work ethic is extremely important to me as I am usually dealing with many projects at once. Having the willingness to keep going can be tough at times but I know that my name is behind what is being produced so that gives me the drive to keep going.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am self taught fashion designer. Being able to think up an idea, source fabrics and materials for that idea, and then to actual create and bring that idea to life brings me an endless amount of joy. What excites me most is the reception I receive from clients and admires of my work. BiCoastal Collection is a brand that I have been building for the past 10 years and there is still a lot of work to be done. In the 4th quarter of 2023 we held an exclusive runway show titled “Back For The Very First Time”, the collection displayed ready to wear pieces showcasing the brand “Luxury Sport” esthetic.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My journey has been all about resilience and adjusting to change. Before deciding to become a designer I studied film and photography with the idea of becoming a music video director. After deciding that was something I no longer wanted to pursue my focused moved towards fashion photography which eventually landed me behind the sewing machine creating ideas I had previously only envisioned in my head. I believe it is very important to never settle and always be willing to learn, “I’m a forever student”. Fashion and the development of fashion is constantly changing and renewing itself. As a designer it very important to stay current but also develop individuality and for your designs and or brand.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Currently I’m facing the challenge of transitioning from being known as a custom designer. At the beginning of my designing journey, I mainly created garments that were custom and specific to what the client would desire. As I have gained more knowledge and experience as a designer my focus now is create pieces specific to my brand BiCoastal Collection. These designs are catered to both men and women, the esthetic is something I define as Luxury Sport. Luxury is comfort, rich, and indulgent. These designs are to sported with confidence and individuality. As I continue on this journey navigating through the fashion industry I hope to surpass these challenge with humility.
