We were lucky to catch up with Billie G. Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Billie G., really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I often refer to myself as a proud “WIP” (work in progress). Whether it’s physically, emotionally, financially or most importantly spiritually. Staying locked in on my spirituality has not only helped me stay grounded but has also helped me define my purpose. Seeking information and sharing that information with the youth, my peers, or my elders aligns with that purpose I’ve learned that I am a teacher of sorts and a protector I’m so loving it. My podcast and my current occupation allows me to do so.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In my current occupation I am a Dean of Culture and Climate for middle and high school which was dream job of mine. I am apart of an amazing charter school in Brooklyn NY my hometown. Long ago during my own HS years many of my educators encouraged me to pursue a career in media due to my deep baritone voice. With that seed planted I always knew that I’d eventually double back and use that very same baritone voice via some form of media. I tried music, voiceovers, radio but podcasting I found during the pandemic and haven’t looked back since.
May 2020 I launched the official first episode of Friendz with Billie Podcast (All Things Relationship) formerly known as Friendz with Benefits. I’ve always been passionate about relationship topics and I would often find myself having these discussions with my friend group. After many of these discussions I’d often wonder to myself I should have recorded that and the pandemic gave me that opportunity. During this podcast journey I’ve had the opportunity to interview, dating coaches, influencers, lawyers, entertainers, etc. I also have my panel which includes sex/relationship Therapist Dr. B and another close Friend of mine Biggz the Philosopher. I often refer to it’s current setup as a relationship variety show. The Pod is available on various streaming platforms along with social media (Instagram, Facebook, Youtube and Tik Tok).
On the show we discuss trending and relationship topics. During interviews they’re one on one with myself and a guest. The highlight of my interviews is the hotseat questions where I ask questions regarding emotional intelligence, finances, communication, goals, and sex all central areas in a relationship. The highlight of the panel discussions is “Sexy Talk” with Dr. B where we discuss various topics related to sex and intimacy in relationships.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Pursuing passions, building your own network of equally passionate people, and always have the mindset of student (remain curious).
I made a conscious decision in life to only pursue things I’m passionate about because this helps give your life purpose and structure.
Surrounding yourself with equally passionate people will only make you better during your journey. As the saying goes Iron sharpens Iron.
Educating yourself is a lifelong journey whether that’s professionally or personally. My goal in life is too always remain curious and seek out all knowledge that will aid me on the journey.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
One of my favorite episodes on the Pod is the mother’s day episode. Myself and my fellow panelist Biggz the Philosopher often refer to ourselves as proud members of the Momma’s Boy club.
My mother was and always will be my hero. Because as a Single mother facing many obstacles she raised three children successfully. She left many gems with me (she deceased 2011) and my favorite that I often reference is “only worry about things you have control over…all the other things trust God to handle it ” She was a pillar of strength and resilience her powerful words no matter my challenges always always gave me a sense of calm.
