Meet Billy Brandes

We recently connected with Billy Brandes and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Billy, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I don’t know if anyone ever really fully overcomes the imposter syndrome type feelings. As creative people we are always our own worst critic and even in the highest moments we’ll be sure to find some kind of flaw or shortcoming that will take us right back to those familiar places of “what could I have done better?” But that being said I think the more you put yourself out there and strive for what you dream about and believe in… I think the easier it can be to put the imposter stuff to the side. And even when it does poke it’s head out you’re able to look back at what you’ve accomplished and those voices go quiet pretty quickly. It helps to carry a certain amount of not giving a f@$k about what others may think or say as well. People will always judge regardless so if you’re able to mute those voices it makes staying focused easier. And then just that… staying focused on what you’re about. That’s the most important thing. If you’re doing what you’re meant to you’ll know because this will be pretty simple for the most part. To quote skateboard legend Mark Gonzales “If you can be not afraid to be laughed at, you could do so many things.” I genuinely believe in that.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the Owner/Artistic Director of the Buckaroo Lodge which is a Sketch Comedy Theater here in the valley. Right now we are a resident theater company with the Main Street Creative Arts Center in Mesa. We are one of if not the valley’s only sketch comedy theater offering comprehensive course instruction, workshops, and performance opportunities. We started back at the end of 2023 with our first Holiday Grandstandular which will be having it’s 3rd show this December 20th at MSCAC. The valley has a vast array of talented folks and we enjoy working with and showcasing all the terrific and creative work that’s out there looking for a home. Along with offering a variety of classes and workshops to help elevate your comedic writing skills. Class and workshop info is available at our website buckaroolodge.com. It’s truly such a joy to see something you’ve written come to life. From the page to the stage… seeing your characters in real time speaking the lines you’ve written and having it all come together is an incredibly exhilarating feeling. If this is something you’re interested in we would love for you to join us.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Don’t be a jerk. That’s probably the big one right. Which should really be kinda the de facto common sense thing but being human can get in the way sometimes. So trying to keep some semblance of grace and gratefulness is important. However you can do it. You never know who keeps tabs of what or when you’ll cross paths or work with folks again so being able to keep those relationships open, ongoing, and friendly is critical.

Stay focused and in your lane. This one can be tricky at times. Staying focused not so much if you’re dedicated and passionate about what you’re doing but the temptation may lurk to delve into different areas that may not be necessary or are already well taken care of. This also carries the risk of spreading yourself too thin and ends up sacrificing your overall product and/or goals. Remember your why… why you got started in the first place.

Lastly I’d say resilience. To be able to roll with the punches and adapt as needed when you have to. The ability to take on the unexpected and thrive in those situations when they arise. Determination and drive are worth their weight in gold when you are putting something together either by yourself or with a small group of like minded people. Not getting caught up in the highs and lows too much as well. They both will come and it’s okay to live in those moments for a brief periods of time but then being able to keep an even head is most beneficial.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

I have to say it’s been the local improv and acting community here in Phoenix. I’ve been a part of this scene for over a decade and the people I’ve met and the relationships that have been fostered are truly remarkable. Working with and getting to know a wide variety of folks over the years has been unmatched and nothing I have put together would be anything without them. Not only on the stage but off of it as well. Lifelong friendships have been found and made over a shared passion for comedy and community. All the qualities, skills, and knowledge has either directly or indirectly come from each person I’ve met along the way. And the incredible instructors I have been fortunate enough to have. Each bestowing their nuggets of wisdom that I carry now with me in my own carved out philosophy. My hats off to them all and I am forever grateful.
