We recently connected with Billy Clifton-Strawn and have shared our conversation below.
Billy, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
To keep my creativity alive, I immerse myself in various environments and activities that spark inspiration. I visit art museums, galleries, and botanical gardens, which offer new perspectives and ideas. I take long walks and bike rides in parks, allowing nature to refresh my mind. Engaging with other artists through conversations and collaborations further fuels my creativity, exposing me to different techniques and viewpoints. These experiences continuously rejuvenate my creative spirit, ensuring it remains vibrant and innovative.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a working visual artist in contemporary art, I utilize digital techniques, digital media, and printed images to convey thoughts and emotions through visual stimuli. My dream is to have this work included in museum collections, leaving a lasting legacy.
I call my approach to art “CREATED IN PIXELS.”
My artistic odyssey, sparked by the gift of an iPad at 64 and an iPhone, defies convention. These tools have opened my creative world in ways I did not think possible. My approach is not confined to traditional methods; instead, I embrace innovation through the use of digital mediums. Using an iPhone as my primary tool, I capture moments that encapsulate the essence of my creative evolution. From traditional photography to avant-garde digital composites, my journey traverses a spectrum of digital techniques, unearthing boundless expressions along the way. Through the symbiosis of tangible and digital elements within each piece, I challenge the norms of contemporary image-making, pushing the boundaries of conventional artistry to redefine the possibilities of visual storytelling.
My work can be experienced in the Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs Emerging Artist Exhibition at the Chastain Art Center, 135 Chastain Park Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30342, until June 15, 2023.
I have the honor of having two of my works, “People are People” and “Broken Promise,” on exhibit at the Coca-Cola Company Headquarters exhibition, “Colors of Love: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion through Art,” from May 31 to July 5, 2024.
Additionally, keep an eye out for my upcoming duo exhibition with the established and very talented Callahan Pope McDonough. This exhibition will open in the Fall of 2024 at Gallery 72, 72 Marietta St NW, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Spirituality:
Spirituality plays a profound role in shaping my artistic journey and creative expression. It serves as a wellspring of inspiration, guiding my hands and heart as I delve into the depths of my inner world to create art that resonates with others. This spiritual connection manifests in the way I perceive and interpret the world around me, infusing my work with a sense of purpose and deeper meaning. Through my art, I seek to explore the ethereal and intangible aspects of human existence, capturing moments of transcendence and contemplation. My use of vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery is a reflection of this spiritual quest, aiming to evoke a sense of wonder and introspection in the viewer. Each piece I create is a meditative process, an act of channeling my spiritual insights into tangible forms, bridging the gap between the seen and the unseen, the known and the mysterious.
Self-Drive and Self-Determination:
Self-drive and self-determination have been pivotal in my evolution as an artist, propelling me forward despite the challenges and obstacles I have encountered. My journey is characterized by a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of my creative potential. This inner drive fuels my daily practice, compelling me to explore new techniques, experiment with different mediums, and continually refine my craft. It is the force that keeps me motivated and focused, enabling me to transform my visions into reality. My self-determination is evident in my willingness to embrace unconventional tools and methods, such as using an iPhone and digital media to create my art. This adaptability and resilience are hallmarks of my artistic process, allowing me to innovate and stay true to my creative vision. Through sheer perseverance and dedication, I have been able to carve out a unique niche for myself in the contemporary art world, demonstrating that passion and hard work can overcome any limitation.
Accepting Help from Others:
Accepting help from others has been an integral part of my artistic journey, enriching my work and expanding my horizons. While self-reliance and determination are crucial, I recognize the value of collaboration and the insights that others can offer. My artistic growth has been greatly enhanced by the support and encouragement of my community, mentors, and fellow artists. This support network provides not only practical assistance but also emotional and intellectual stimulation, fostering an environment where creativity can thrive. Embracing help has taught me the importance of humility and the power of shared knowledge and experiences. It has opened doors to new opportunities, such as exhibitions and collaborations, which I might not have been able to achieve on my own. By welcoming the input and expertise of others, I have been able to broaden my perspective, refine my techniques, and bring my artistic visions to life in ways that surpass my solo efforts. This collaborative spirit underscores the interconnectedness of the artistic community, reminding me that while the creative journey is deeply personal, it is also enriched by the contributions and support of others.
Here is my humble advice: If you are just starting out or revisiting an art career, establishing a profound connection with your inner spirituality can be essential for finding inspiration and purpose. Cultivate self-drive and determination to overcome challenges and continuously improve your craft. Embrace innovation and remain open to unconventional methods. Value the support and insights of others, as collaboration can greatly enhance your growth. Stay humble and acknowledge the significance of shared knowledge and experiences. Through perseverance, adaptability, and community, you can create meaningful, transcendent art that resonates deeply with others.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The primary obstacle or challenge I am currently facing is gaining recognition and inclusion in museum collections. To overcome this challenge, I am actively working on increasing my visibility and establishing connections within the art community. This requires me to SHOW UP and be seem. This involves participating in exhibitions, networking with curators and art professionals, and submitting my work for consideration in museum exhibitions and collections. Additionally, I am focusing on refining my artistic portfolio and enhancing the quality and impact of my work to make it more appealing to museum curators and collectors. By persistently pursuing these avenues and continuously striving to elevate my artistic practice, I am committed to overcoming this obstacle and achieving my goal of being included in museum collections.
