Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Billy Kheel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Billy, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism comes from a sense of community. I feel lucky to live in a time when we can connect so easily around common interests and passions. When I first started making art about sports I felt like the only one doing it. People would tell me that no one who likes sports would also like art or vice versa. But I’ve come to realize there are many people out there who are as fascinated with the stories, creativity, passions, and wild juxtapositions that you can find in sports as I am. I’m optimistic because I see people younger than me that don’t see distinctions between art and sports like there used to be back in the day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an artist who makes fabric works about sports. I make tapestries, pennants, and custom clothing, using appliqué as my technique. I feel that my work appeals to people that are interested in sports culture as well as people who are interested in craft techniques. The combination of the soft, hand sewn fabric and the athletic subject matter is unique. I want my work to evoke the more artistic, human and emotional side of sports other than the traditional or gambling side. I feel lucky to have met many people who feel the same way. This summer I’m going to be in an art show about the 90’s era Chicago Bulls called “Bullsh!t!” in Australia – so the sports art movement is going global!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think first you should follow your passion. There should be an energy drawing you to a project, and it’s your job to be open to that energy and follow it. Then I think you need to finish projects. Everything is perfect in your head but it is only by seeing it through can you find the outcome and core of a piece. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, always be a lifelong learner. You can learn from anyone anywhere in any situation. Always be learning.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for people to collaborate with! I love to work with all kinds of people who are open to the idea of mixing sports, art, craft and music. I’ve worked with brands, publications and other artists and I’ve also been given amazing ideas by people that are just passionate, thoughtful and have similar vibes. My dream collab would to be to spend a season as an artist in residence for the Miami Dolphins. I know owner Stephen Ross is into art and sports so it would be a perfect fit.
