We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Billy Kidd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Billy below.
Billy, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
By constantly learning from my peers and colleagues. By immersing myself into all art forms, not just magic. I study body and movement, voice, and acting and this helps me stay creative when I am working on new magic.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Billy Kidd and I am a professional female magician. My magic takes me all over the world. I love performing live even though I have done numerous television programs across the globe. I love taking old classics of magic and putting my own creative twist in it and try to create something new and refreshing. So many magicians just imitate and copy and I try m hardest to never do that. I am very passionate about the art of magic and I my goal is to elevate the art of magic within the eyes of the public. For the last 10 years I have been running my own magic theatre in England called Krowd Keepers Magic Theatre. It is the space where I get to play and fail over and over again to help make myself a better magician and performer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Having different and varied experiences in all walks of life. Having hobbies outside of my job. 2) Being classically trained in theatre helped me learn how to work with other people in a collaborative environment.
3) I was heavily into sports when I was younger and looking back I see how it shaped me today. Being able to do team work, respecting differences in others and learning to work and play together is very important.
My best advice is to have absolute no ego. You are never going to be the expert in the room. Always keep learning.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was not care what I do. If they had any say or influence on me I would have never listened anyhow. So I am grateful their presence was minimal. No restrictions. No rules.
