Meet Billy Wilson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Billy Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Billy below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Billy with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

Probably from knowing I’m not good enough. It’s definitely the opposite of the “you are enough” ideology that people like to toss around. I think as a baseline, there are some strands of veracity in there, but it’s gotten hijacked and rebranded as an excuse for complacency and inaction. I think it’s much more efficient to look the truth in the face, no matter how uncomfortable it is, and use it to your advantage. I might actually be good but I’m not as good as I want to be. Perfection doesn’t exist but those who strive for it will surely get closer to its nearest approximation than those who don’t.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m Billy Wilson and I’m a recording artist. I write, produce, and perform all of my music. I primarily sing and play guitar. I’ve been releasing the best music I’ve ever made alongside my go-to rhythm section of Brady Young and Levi Matulis and mixing and mastering team of Mark Needham and Howie Weinberg. I’m releasing a constant slew of singles which will later be assembled as my debut album in 2026. “No One’s Valentine” is available on streaming platforms now. “Loaded and Lonesome” is the next slated release.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I attribute my successes to interest, desire, and resilience. Being genuinely interested in things is the most effective way to amass a wealth of useful knowledge and information in your field. Learning won’t feel like homework; it will feel like entertainment. Regarding desire, you have to want it more than anything. If you could see yourself being happy doing anything else, you aren’t in the right field. It’s better to do what you love and be miserable than to do something else and convince yourself you’re happy. Eventually, the CEO of one of the biggest companies on the planet is going to tell you to your face that your music is “generic and unexciting”. There are going to be times where you lose your band, your job, your girlfriend, your catalytic converter, your mind, and just about everything else. The only thing you can do is to keep going because you love it. You have to have the interest, desire, and resilience to do so.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

I think it’s imperative to improve in every capacity possible. Lean into what you’re good at and become great at it. Simultaneously, fix your flaws. It’s not mutually exclusive. You can improve in parallel. It’s better to be more focused in your approach and just be everything you want to be. Don’t try and do everything for the sake of doing it all. You’ll end up scattered and exhausted. Do what you do because it’s who you are. Define your expectations and outwork everyone including yourself.
