We recently connected with Bite! and have shared our conversation below.
Bite!, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
We keep our creativity alive by keeping our writing process fun and interesting. We consume other inspiring creative works, either individually or by watching other local bands, and collaborating to make our own style of music with each other as bandmates.
We usually like to sit outside in the fresh air to keep our writing process fresh while we bounce ideas off of each other, and we have a very methodical way of writing our music and making sure every idea is on the table to see what sticks.
What makes our collaboration effective during our writing process mostly comes from our different musical backgrounds and the different genres we enjoy. We have bandmates who like much heavier music, and other bandmates that enjoy more experimental genres. Though this seems counter productive, it actually brings even more ideas to the table during our writing process.
Historically, Bite! Has been inspired by other creative works to enhance our writing process, such as the creation of our song Unrequited. During the writing process of this song, we took a lot of creative inspiration from Peirce the Veil for stylistic choices and chord voicings. This allowed us to experiment with different sounds that we had previously not used. The stylistic outcome of Unrequited has since colored the future work of Bite!.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are an Alternative Metal band, taking inspiration from bands like Tool, Dying Wish, Death, Spiritbox, Peirce the Viel, and My Chemical Romance. We have played several shows at venues in the the KCMO and Lawrence KS area, like The Bottleneck, Replay Lounge, Sk8bar, Josey Records, and many more. We have played with some amazing music groups like Morning in May, Dark Below, Captain Howdy, Ospree, Oxytoxin. We have an intense sound with musically dense riffs, with all of our members getting the opportunity to show off their individual skills as we play. Our energy is a physical presence you can feel, and our breakdowns and musical layering are a featured specialty in our music.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Our 3 most important qualities, skills, and/or areas of knowledge include our music composition skills, collaborative skills, and professionalism.
Our songwriting ability is one of our strongest areas of knowledge; we work really hard to make sure our compositions are very thought out and intricate musically, while still being relatable and enjoyable to the average listener. Understanding all of these factors to create an enjoyable piece of music takes a lot of comprehension of what makes a song interesting, and a lot of collaborative effort to ensure every idea is heard and executed effectively.
Additionally, being able to work together, not only as a band, but as friends, is critical to ensure all of the musical layers fit together in a satisfying way for compositions, and being able to communicate as a unit to venues and bands who reach out to us to play shows and secure future opportunities or relationships.
Professionalism is a cornerstone that remains a top priority of Bite!’s presentation on and off stage. Making valuable first impressions of our organization has made us more approachable and bookable. These qualities have helped us stand out when it comes to other bands and venues that seek approachability and professionalism when searching for potential artists to book.
Some ways Bite! ensures a professional look include our flexibility and willingness to work with everyone, our timely response times and dedication to ensuring everything runs smoothly. This extra effort drives Bite! to new and better opportunities.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge Bite! has faced so far has been funding the music recording process. We are currently addressing this issue by booking more shows than ever before, including booking in markets outside of our hometown of the KCMO area, such as Lawrence, where the music scene has been very accepting of us. All of the money we’ve earned from these shows has gone to directly fund our endeavors.
