We were lucky to catch up with Blaaik Blackwolf recently and have shared our conversation below.
Blaaik, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
As a young boy in North Florida, snakes, lizards and despised critters of all kinds were everywhere. I developed a love for the unloved; fascinated by monsters and “villains,” routing for Godzilla, Skeletor and all the misunderstood. Naturally, when I heard heavy metal chainsaw guitars and squealing solos I was hooked.
I knew right then n there that playing guitar on stage was the closest to a warrior or barbarian I would get in the modern world.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I knew as soon as I began playing guitar that it was for me; my technique was unique. With thought out emotive movements and more heart than I offered even to loved ones, I was determined to be heard and respected. Every time I played in a music shop, someone would ask the name of my band; not if I WAS in a band! And that was a huge motivator to keep on trucking my heavy metal styled energy driven riffs and licks.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Tenacity, discipline and repetition are what gave me the edge. I had been involved in martial arts, sports teams including hockey and soccer and art classes which all seemed to lend themselves to those qualities as I applied them to my life, and my guitar playing.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My mother, Cheryl Ann, was my biggest fan and support.
She would say, “No matter what you’re doing, just be the best. You’re playing guitar? Be the best! Doing a job? Be the best! Doing the dishes? Be the best!”
And this sort of mentality helped me to build a strong self respect and internal voice that always said “Yes you can” or “Be better”
