Meet Blaine Terry

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Blaine Terry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Blaine, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

This is an interesting question that should be addressed. Work ethic doesn’t come from anywhere or anyone. Work ethic is a series of choices throughout the day. Motivation comes from somewhere or something. Motivation is doing something when you want to. Work ethic is choosing to do something that needs to be done, regardless of the circumstances.

Recently I have been trying to define success, and I don’t know how. However I can easily define failure. My work ethic is base around making choices, that I believe a failure would not make. When I don’t know what choice to make…something always needs to be cleaned.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I wish I had an extraordinary story. After an excellent career in a Big Box gym, I left as a leader to open my own CrossFit box. It was an amazing opportunity that I would have been a fool for passing up, and ultimately its been the greatest thing I have ever done. I wake up every day to an amazing group of people that love fitness so much they are willing to pay me to continue to keep my doors open.

I will only take responsibility for keeping our community safe. It has been hard to turn people away when they aren’t a good fit. Ultimately it has always been the right choice.

I am not special, I am surrounded by great people that are special to me.

Be Better CrossFit is a place that is built on uplifting your neighbors, and competing against yourself.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The only thing naturally that I come by is a lack of anxiety. That being said, when problems present themselves I generally remain calm and understand there is a solution.
Years in customer service have taught me the most important thing. Listen to your customer, truly understand what your customer wants, and deliver the product they are asking for.

The advice I would give is what I was told. Bite off more than you can chew, and figure out how to swallow it.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents punished me when I broke the rules, and rewarded me when I exceeded expectations. It is a truly special thing to understand balance in its simplest form.

Par does not deserve praise.
