We were lucky to catch up with Blair Roedel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Blair, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room can feel isolating at times, but I’ve learned to see it as an opportunity to represent a unique perspective. Early on, I felt the weight of imposter syndrome, especially in my previous career—it was easy to feel like I didn’t belong. But entrepreneurship has completely shifted that for me. When you build something from the ground up, there’s no room to feel like an imposter because you’re the one making the decisions, driving the vision, and proving your own worth every day.
Now, when I’m in those rooms, I lead with confidence in my expertise and my track record. I focus on preparation—knowing my value and being ready to contribute meaningfully. I’ve also reframed those situations; instead of focusing on being ‘the only one,’ I focus on what I uniquely bring. That mindset has allowed me to not only be effective but also to help make those spaces more inclusive and welcoming for others.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m the owner of BEC Innovations, a general contracting company that specializes in making home renovations less stressful and more rewarding for homeowners. Renovations can often feel overwhelming—there’s excitement, but also fear and frustration, and it’s easy for homeowners to feel lost in the process. That’s where we come in. We focus on exceptional communication, careful planning, and a client-first approach to make the entire experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We see ourselves not just as contractors, but as partners in creating spaces that our clients love.
One of the initiatives I’m most excited about is The Home Team, our preventative home maintenance program. Homes are an investment, and maintaining them shouldn’t feel like a burden. With The Home Team, we handle routine upkeep, catch small problems before they become big ones, and help homeowners stay ahead of the game. It’s a great way to ensure peace of mind and protect what is often their largest investment.
Right now, we’re focused on growing both our renovation services and The Home Team. Whether it’s building dream kitchens and bathrooms, creating additions that make your space feel more like ‘home,’ or helping homeowners avoid costly repairs, we’re always looking for ways to innovate and provide more value to our clients. At the end of the day, it’s about delivering high-quality results and creating an experience that makes people feel cared for.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have been the most impactful in my journey:
1. The ability to be told no and continue on. Early on, I realized that rejection isn’t personal—it’s part of the process. Every ‘no’ gets you closer to a ‘yes,’ and learning to keep going despite setbacks has been crucial.
2. An understanding that persistence is more valuable than perfection. In entrepreneurship, there’s never a perfect moment or solution. Progress is what matters. Taking consistent action, learning from mistakes, and iterating along the way has been far more effective than chasing unattainable perfection.
3. Adaptability. The ability to pivot and adjust to new circumstances has made all the difference. Whether it’s changing how we deliver services, responding to market demands, or troubleshooting on a project, staying flexible has been essential to our success.
Advice for others:
First, don’t let rejection stop you—each no is a step forward. Second, focus on persistence rather than getting it perfect every time. And third, stay flexible; the ability to adapt will open doors you didn’t even know existed.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has had a significant impact on my growth is The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt. It’s a parable that blends storytelling with lessons in systems thinking and problem-solving.
The biggest nugget of wisdom I took from it is that solving a bottleneck and discovering a new bottleneck isn’t a failure—it’s the definition of progress. In any system, whether it’s manufacturing, project management, or even life, there will always be a constraint. Identifying and addressing it is what moves you forward. The process of constantly improving and tackling what’s next is how growth happens.
This lesson has been invaluable in my work. Whether it’s in streamlining our renovation processes or improving how we serve clients, I’ve learned to embrace bottlenecks as opportunities to innovate and improve, rather than obstacles to fear.
