Meet Blake Ballard

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Blake Ballard. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Blake, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I still deal with imposter syndrome and I’ve been doing this for nearly a decade. Something I try to remember though is that comparison is the thief of joy. Comparing your work to other photographers will only lead to feelings of inadequacy and fuel imposter syndrome. Instead, focus on your own unique style and vision as a photographer. Embrace what sets you apart from others and celebrate your individuality.

It is also important to remind yourself that entering a shoot with nerves is healthy. Nervousness shows that you care about your work and want to do your best. Use these nerves as motivation to push yourself and create your best work.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
With a steadfast fixation on creating compelling, beautiful work, Blake Ballard has had a crucial hand in developing many of the most sought after talent in the modeling arena. With a diverse portfolio and client list, and countless publications (including the formation of his own magazine, Narrative) behind him, Blake always pushes the envelope creatively and strives to breathe fresh life and excitement into each and every project. Blake’s adeptness when it comes to directing leads to getting the absolute best that a subject has to offer, lending an element of authenticity to the final images that consistently exceed client expectations.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
From a young age, my parents taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. I learned to give my best effort in everything I do, no matter how big or small the task. This work ethic has helped me persevere through challenges and setbacks, and has ultimately played a significant role in shaping my success. I have pretty severe OCD, so as a result I always have been someone who pays attention to the small details. I believe that it is the little things that can truly make a difference and set you apart from others. This attention to detail has helped me excel in my work and ensure that everything I do is of the highest quality. It has also helped me develop a keen eye for aesthetics and design, which has been crucial in my pursuit of beauty.
As a result, I have always been passionate about beauty and the impact it can have on the world. Whether it’s through art, fashion, or nature, I am constantly inspired by the beauty around me and strive to create and appreciate it in everything I do. This passion has fueled my drive to pursue a career in this industry where I’m bring more beauty into the world through my photographs..

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents instilled a diligent work ethic in me from a young age by modeling it themselves. My father in particular showed me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and dedication in achieving goals and success in life. He often worked long hours and travelled all over the world to provide for our family and did it with a smile on his face.

In addition, my parents consistently encouraged me to strive for excellence in everything I did. They set high expectations for me and pushed me to do my best, whether it was in school, sport or the arts. They instilled in me a belief that settling for mediocrity was not an option and that I should always aim for excellence.

Through their guidance and support, my parents taught me the value of hard work, determination, and never settling for less than my best effort. These lessons have stayed with me throughout my life and have shaped how I have grown in my profession. I am grateful for the foundation my parents laid for me and the values they imparted, which continue to drive me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life.
