Meet Blake Welch

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blake Welch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Blake, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

With over 30 years in the design and advertising industry, I learned that if you were to meet deadlines (which are paramount) you must develop and adhere to a solid work ethic. Do good work and deliver on time.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Born in El Paso, Texas — Blake takes artistic inspiration from a childhood of exploring the vast desert landscape he grew up in — inspired by the breathtaking views of Texas and New Mexico that he witnessed as a child — he incorporates those visions into his work today. At the age of 9, Blake relocated to Colorado where he currently resides. He attended Colorado State University earning a BFA in graphic design. Following graduation, he worked at Better Homes and Gardens and a multitude of Denver ad agencies — prior to opening his own design agency (Welch Creative Group) in the heart of Downtown Denver in the mid 90s. Blake is a professor and Program Director for the Multimedia Graphic Design department at Front Range Community College (with prior teaching positions at CSU and Regis University).

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

A sense of adventure. The ability to manage fear and doubt. Initiative to keep growing, trying new things

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

Allowing me the freedom to explore, to fail, to try again and to succeed. Nothing was impossible. But everything presents challenges. And the freedom to acknowledge what wasn’t working and how to adapt.
