We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blanca Wall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Blanca with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My unwavering work ethic is deeply rooted in my upbringing, growing up on a farm in Sweden, I learned resilience early on and culturally, the belief of work and diligence have very much a moral value and help create a rewarding routine. My grandmother would often remind me that nothing worth having comes easy and life is not always fair. I worked from an early age with different summer jobs and after school whenever possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m originally from Sweden and moved to Miami as an International Student to follow my passion for Interior Architecture. Trained in the fine arts, I’ve had a lifelong passion for art, architecture and Design. I was delighted to study and get my design degree from Florida International University and be a part of the ever-evolving city of Miami, watching it grow and prosper during my last 30 years living in the city.
After working for several big-name firms in the city, I decided to strike out on my own in 2013 and just last year my small but mighty interior design studio just celebrated 10 years in business.
I know that good Interior Design depends on excellent communication. “Great design is about building a lifestyle, and life is in the details”, it’s imperative to listen, present and professionally execute a plan shaped around the client’s style, timeline, and budget. With a habit of tailoring personal solutions, I’m committed in delivering exceptional results that exceeds our clients’ expectations.
The Wall Studio is a multi-disciplinary Interior Design firm, specializing in custom residential and boutique hospitality projects. We offer comprehensive design services from specifying architectural finishes, collaborating with developers, builders, artisans to customizing millwork and furnishings. We guide our clients along every step of the renovation process from concept to completion.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Taking Risk: I would certainly say, don’t shy away from trying something new and making mistakes, as mistakes is how we learn and are essential for career growth, you never know what might come of it.
Optimism: Approaching each day with a form of optimism and action-oriented purpose is essential, as well as trying to find power in your passions. The strength lies in one’s mindset, discipline is important, to learn to surmount challenges.
Also, very important reminder to self, that life is about the journey and to be patient with yourself and proud for every small win.
Integrity: Remain true to yourself and your vision as you grow. I think a large part of our success comes from hard work but also integrity and honesty are qualities that can never be underestimated.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The Rotary club helped me do an exchange program in Houston Texas when I was 17 years old, this experience helped me on the path towards my professional career and taught me independence. Studying abroad and learning a new language helped me build my confidence and pushed me to be more outgoing and also helped me learn the art of networking and connecting with people. I also remember during my first few years in college, I didn’t have a personal computer, and this taught me discipline and resilience, making sure I utilized every second of the computer lab on campus to accomplish my assignments. I’m incredibly thankful for the lesson’s life has given as it has helped shape me to the person I’m today, I’m also thankful to my friends, former teachers, employers and mentors alike for all the support throughout the years.
