Meet BLKMJKjr

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful BLKMJKjr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

BLKMJKjr, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by staying in my own lane. Although hard at times, I make it a point not to listen to too much new music because I don’t want to be subconsciously influenced to make similarly sounding music. It is however refreshing from time to time to check in with what’s new to get a bead on where the game currently is, but for the most part I try to avoid listening to too much.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a musician by passion and an attorney by trade. I make posi-trap and handle people problems. The thing that set my art a part is that it truly comes from the heart. I have not really focused on being commercially viable as much as sincerely setting out to make the best possible product I can regardless of who is or is not listening. A while ago I decided that listeners deserved better, and I set out to create such a thing. Inspired by both the greats I grew up on like Outkast and Tribe Called Quest, as ell as the new wave trap pioneers like Key! and Pee Wee Longway I decided to cook up my own spin on things. My only goal was create something jamming yet informative.. As a criminal defense attorney I can’t encourage the listener to crash out, but I also recognize that music is entertainment and no one listening to hear a lecture.

I have a few new projects out on all streaming platforms like “Chasin Jason Wit A Knife At A Radio Station”, “Dark Wave”, “Top Eight At 8” and “Don’t Trip Call Trip”. Check out some of the music and see what you think. EXPLORE THE BLKMJKjr CATALOG!!!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

If I had to pick three skills/qualities I would have to go with purpose, passion, and patience. I think if you possess these three things you will be able to remain self motivated enough to persevere even when the math ain’t mathing. Do what you love and at least you enjoyed yourself. Too often we equate fame and mass appeal with quality. There is nothing wrong with just making something dope that you enjoy.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am always looking to work if you’re looking to collab! I have worked with everyone from rock bands to bluegrass bands to other hip hop artists etc.. I just love music. A lot of unexpected collaborations make for pretty interesting art. If you’re looking to work feel free to shoot me a DM on IG @BLKMJKjr or email me at BLKMJKjr@gmail.com.
