We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bo Stegall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bo, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose changes with each new season of life, but ultimately my entire career was shaped around the fact that I lost my mother when I was 17 years old. She was a hair stylist who owned a “Beauty Shop”. I became a hair stylist and then started a line of hair products (Bo Stegall | The Collection) and a salon (Bo Stegall | The Salon) in her memory. I’m also a first time Dad to my sweet daughter Noa Grace. She is why I get up everyday and work so hard for our little family.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My full time job being the CEO of my Hair Product company (Bo Stegall | The Collection). I recently launched my blow dryer brush. It’s the first blow dryer brush in the world with SuperRED Technology which helps prevent damaging the hair. It’s a salon professional hair tool that eliminates frizz and creates volume for all hair lengths and textures.
Being able to serve my customers and anyone who has hair or scalp issues is the best part of my work. I own 100% of my company. I set extremely high standards for my customer’s experience. I’m one of the only major hair product companies who you can speak directly to the owner of that company at anytime. I’m the personal hair stylist you can message anytime day or night with your hair and scalp problems.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I grew up with both parents owning their own small companies. It became clear to me that the reason we were able to eat at night was because of the customers.
This realization transferred into my professional career as I built companies. The service of my customers is at the forefront of my mission as the CEO.
You have to know what you want. You don’t have to know how to get it, but you have to be able to decide what you want. For me, I wanted to serve people and remove parabens from hair products. Then from there it was a matter of taking small steps at a time. It took me 9 years of researching and developing before launching my Hair Products to the world. I wasn’t handed a thing. I built it with hard work, determination, and praying that God would use me to make people feel loved.
Identity what you want. Then take small action steps. Results don’t happen overnight. It’s not about the end goal. Life is about the journey. Embrace each moment and be thankful for today. Look for the good in others. Be kind and smile at a stranger, it could save their life.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Becoming a first time Dad this year has changed me forever more. I’ve learned how to be more present in the moment. Instead of thinking 5 steps ahead at all times, I just simply enjoy being present. I’m learning there is no value in fear. We must walk through life with faith. My daughter is God’s child. He just gave me the most beautiful responsibility of being her parent.
