Meet Bo Zhang

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bo Zhang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with BO below.

BO, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Love and be interested in all new things around you. Perhaps many people think that life is monotonous, but as long as we are curious, there will be many surprises and interesting things around us, which are all good sources of creativity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a designer and artist, I started my own studio in 2020, Desz Office, which is a creative studio that aims to integrate art, design, culture and craftsmanship. During the years of work, I have become friends with many artists, craftsmen, institutions or event organizers, and entrepreneurs. I think there should be a new business model that benefits everyone, whether it is society, the public, designers, artists, craftsmen or factories.

Therefore, I launched the RE-CRAFT project in 2023. RE-Craft is changing the public’s perception of personal entrepreneurship. Especially independent designers, new brands, and skilled craftsmen. RE-CRAFT’s goal is one person, one online office and one company.

I think that in the future commercial market, more independent products will be more competitive. Now most products on the market are similar, and new innovative brands will bring more choices to the public. The original intention of RE-CRAFT is to make it possible for one person to start a business. Even if the entrepreneur has no experience, no space, and no resources.

In 2024, RE-CRAFT was exhibited and promoted at NYCxDesign Festival, Paris Design Week, and Dutch Design Week. I saw many young independent designers or entrepreneurs interested in RE-CRAFT. I invited more than 100 entrepreneurs to use RE-CRAFT. I was very happy when I saw these entrepreneurs quickly launch their new products and achieve success with the help of RE-CRAFT.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Learning

I think people need to learn to grow at all times. In fact, an 18-year-old designer is the same as a 50-year-old designer. Newer knowledge will help us create better works.

Patience

Patience is very important for young people. We know that success in anything will not be achieved overnight. Success requires time and persistence. When we start a new challenge, we must be patient enough to persevere

Curiosity

As an artist and designer, I think curiosity is the source of creativity. We will encounter many shining points in our daily lives. Don’t see them and then forget them. Be curious and study these interesting ideas again.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

In the past year, I have transformed from a designer to an entrepreneur. I think my biggest gain and progress in the past year is that I will consider and evaluate things more comprehensively, and actively find solutions no matter what difficulties and challenges I encounter. RE-CRAFT is our second entrepreneurial project, but it is more complicated. For example, optimizing the core content of the project, promoting the project, finding investors and partners, etc., all require more comprehensive analysis and thinking to advance the project development bit by bit.
