Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bob Dix. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bob, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always been an artist, but early on I followed bad advice and people telling me “you can’t eat paint” even though have had indicator after indicator that I could. But the unknown is scary to people.
During covid, my plans changed dramatically. All the while my mother had taken ill. My unemployment ran out and I was working on a resume for the first time in 20 years. Hurricane Ida hit, flooding Philadelphia highways etc. someone suggested I do an art piece in response and I posted it to the internet not thinking anything of it. By next morning it had gone viral and was able to pay my bills for several months. Similar things have happened over and over
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I illustrate a lot of horror, monster, pop culture imagery, as well as a focus on Philadelphia moments that are unusual. I do prints and create merchandise from this imagery.
I also teach art, and enjoy that aspect of my career.
I’ve been doing art professionally for decades, with a strong new conviction during covid. It’s been a long journey.
I have several shows and events I participate in, which you can see on IG @ vampirevampireboy, as well as my ongoing series at www. philODDelphia.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Always be open to learn, and keep an open mind. Work on your skills continusly and don’t be afraid to experiment.
Be open to what happens, good or bad. Failure is just a lesson. Mistakes are where you will learn.
And stay strong against the negativity. Nothing good comes from negativity.
Creative people should feed their souls. And surround themselves with creative people.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Artists Way by Julie Cameron has provided me with ongoing inspiration for decades. Just the simplest parts, of the “morning pages” and “artist” dates are important as well as the exercises and lessons through out.
Creativity is an energy. Harness it. Believe it. Live it.
