Meet Bob Gold

We were lucky to catch up with Bob Gold recently and have shared our conversation below.

Bob, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I have been extraordinarily fortunate in life and work. Not without pain. And the results are my reward.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I founded and lead Bob Gold & Associates, one of the premiere communications public relations agencies specializing in Technology, Media and Telecom.  In 2019 Public Relations Society (PRSA) Los Angeles named me Communications Professional of the Year. And the agency was named by Forbes as one of the country’s best PR Agencies in 2021, with a 5-star rating. The agency, founded 25 years ago, has helped launch nearly two dozen companies, re-branded others, and created successful campaigns for numerous privately-owned and Fortune 500 brands. Bob has also helped raise millions of dollars for charities, taught hundreds of students and helped further strategic business plans for numerous businesses and associations.

I’m the author of the popular children’s picture book, “The Shiny Penny,” and a collection of poems, “Words to Lift By,” and a 100-year retrospective of my Synagogue. I’ve been fortunate to receive many honors including being inducted into the Cable TV Pioneers along with Comcast’s Brian Roberts, CNN’s Ted Turner and other notables and featured in the Cable Center’s one-hour Oral history about my career in managing messaging for the Cable Industry.

I hold a master’s degree in communications management from the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Southern California, where I led the Alumni Board of Directors for a decade.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
These 3 skills have been essential to my success:

1) Endless curiosity
2) Passionate about helping people and their businesses succeed
3) Being able to estimate costs immediately without a calculator

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Rather than point to one person, because there are so many folks who have guided, and counseled me along the way it’s hard to give credit to one person. For example, my mother truly valued my opinion, but that’s only because she paid so much for me to have one. So let’s talk about having a philosophy for success:

1) Bad things, painful things inevitably happen. These are to be celebrated because they propel us, like fuel, to want to improve. Think of this – maybe it took the Holocaust to have a Jewish state today. Maybe it took millions dying of AIDS to have same sex marriage. Maybe the outcomes of these painful episodes are not seen in our lifetime, but they will come. I have to believe homelessness, for example will result in a very positive new order.

2) I am an optimist. If bad things happen for a reason, how could I be otherwise?

3) Happiness is having someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to. A busy person is a happy person.
