We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bohan Zhang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bohan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I am a filmmaker from China, and my journey into the world of film began at a young age. As a child, I was always drawn to the magic of storytelling and the escapism that movies provided. My desire to find a refuge beyond the realities of everyday life led me to explore films extensively. However, it wasn’t until I watched “The Lord of the Rings” on the big screen that my passion truly took shape. The grandeur and immersive experience of seeing that film in a theater left a profound impact on me.
From that moment, I was determined to pursue a career in filmmaking. During my middle and high school years, I became a voracious consumer of movies. I watched countless films, often renting pirated DVDs to broaden my exposure to different genres and styles. This period of intense film-watching allowed me to develop a deep appreciation for the art form and a strong understanding of storytelling techniques.
My unwavering dedication to cinema eventually led me to study at the prestigious Beijing Film Academy and later at Columbia University, where I honed my craft and developed the skills necessary to become a director and producer. Today, as I work on various projects in the U.S. and continue to apply for my O-1 visa, I am driven by the same passion that first ignited my love for film. I am committed to creating stories that resonate with audiences and provide them with the same sense of wonder and escapism that I experienced as a young moviegoer.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey as a filmmaker, there are three key qualities and skills that have been most impactful in shaping my career:
1. **Persistence and Resilience**
– **Impact:** The film industry is known for its challenges and setbacks. Persistence and resilience have been crucial in navigating these obstacles. Whether it’s dealing with funding issues, production delays, or creative differences, the ability to keep pushing forward and stay committed to my vision has been essential.
– **Advice:** For those early in their journey, understand that setbacks are part of the process. Develop a thick skin, and don’t let failures deter you. Instead, use them as learning opportunities to improve and grow. Keep your end goal in sight and remain steadfast in your pursuit.
2. **Creative Vision and Storytelling Skills**
– **Impact:** As a filmmaker, having a strong creative vision and the ability to tell compelling stories are fundamental. These skills have allowed me to create films that resonate with audiences and stand out in a competitive market. My background in both Chinese and American cultures has enriched my storytelling, allowing me to create unique narratives that bridge cultural gaps.
– **Advice:** To develop these skills, immerse yourself in a wide range of films, literature, and art. Study the work of great storytellers and understand what makes their stories impactful. Practice writing, directing, and producing your own projects, no matter how small. The more you create, the more you will refine your voice and vision.
3. **Collaboration and Networking**
– **Impact:** Film is a collaborative art form, and the ability to work well with others is vital. Building strong relationships with fellow filmmakers, actors, crew members, and industry professionals has been instrumental in my career. Collaboration often leads to new opportunities and insights that can elevate a project.
– **Advice:** Early in your journey, focus on building a network of supportive and talented individuals. Attend film festivals, industry events, and workshops. Be open to feedback and willing to learn from others. Collaboration is not just about working together on a project; it’s about creating a community that supports and inspires each other.
By focusing on these three areas—persistence and resilience, creative vision and storytelling skills, and collaboration and networking—you can lay a strong foundation for a successful career in filmmaking. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination, so embrace every step with passion and dedication.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” has been a profoundly influential book in my life, shaping my perspectives and inspiring my journey as a filmmaker. The reasons for its significant impact are multifaceted:
1. **Complex Characters and Moral Ambiguity**
– **Reason:** “Moby-Dick” is renowned for its complex characters, particularly Captain Ahab, whose obsession with the white whale drives the narrative. The moral ambiguity and psychological depth of the characters have taught me the importance of creating multi-dimensional characters in my own stories. This complexity makes the narrative more compelling and relatable, providing a rich source of inspiration for character development in my films.
2. **Exploration of Obsession and Human Nature**
– **Reason:** The central theme of obsession in “Moby-Dick” resonates deeply with me. Captain Ahab’s relentless pursuit of the white whale symbolizes the human condition and our often destructive pursuit of our goals. This theme has influenced my storytelling, encouraging me to explore the darker aspects of human nature and the consequences of unchecked ambition in my work.
3. **Symbolism and Allegory**
– **Reason:** “Moby-Dick” is rich with symbolism and allegory, from the white whale itself to the vast, unforgiving ocean. These literary devices have expanded my understanding of how to imbue my films with deeper meanings and themes. They have shown me how to use visual and narrative elements to convey complex ideas and emotions, adding layers of depth to my storytelling.
4. **Narrative Structure and Style**
– **Reason:** The unique narrative structure and style of “Moby-Dick,” with its blend of adventure, philosophical musings, and detailed descriptions, have influenced my approach to filmmaking. The book’s ability to weave together different genres and narrative techniques has inspired me to experiment with storytelling formats and styles, striving to create films that are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.
5. **Resilience and Determination**
– **Reason:** The sheer determination of Captain Ahab, despite its tragic consequences, underscores the importance of resilience and commitment to one’s vision. As a filmmaker, the journey can be fraught with challenges and setbacks. “Moby-Dick” has reinforced the idea that perseverance and an unwavering dedication to my craft are crucial for overcoming obstacles and achieving success.
In conclusion, “Moby-Dick” has had a lasting impact on my life and career. Its themes, characters, and narrative techniques have deeply influenced my approach to storytelling, inspiring me to create films that explore the complexities of human nature and resonate with audiences on multiple levels. This literary masterpiece continues to be a source of inspiration and a guiding force in my work as a filmmaker.
