We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bojack Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi BoJack , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My mother. She’s an immigrant from El Salvador, came to Texas in the year 2000 when she was 16. Since she moved here, she’s always worked her *ss off. While she was going to highschool, she was working as a cleaning lady. She never ended up finishing school due to some unfortunate circumstances with my great uncle, she moved to Stockton, California where she met my dad. She got pregnant when she was 18. When I was a year and half old, they split, we moved to Chelsea, Massachusetts where she worked 2 jobs in order to provide food and roof over our heads. No matter how tired she was, she always worked so hard to better her life. My mother. Jennifer, taught me to never give up and to always work towards your goals no matter where you start.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Where to begin, It all started out when I was six years old. My uncle Ricky (mom’s brother) stopped by the house one day and handed me a CD. Get Rich or Die Trying by 50 Cent. Man soon as I put in that disc into my cd player and heard the sounds of gangsta rap blast through the speakers, I fell in love with Hip Hop. What captivated me was the way you could express yourself and inspiring others by telling YOUR STORY. I’ve always been a writer of short stories, hell I even had my own comic book universe! Since I heard 50 spit his first bars I knew I wanted to be a rapper. So fast forward like five years, sixth grade. Couple kids in my class would run a basketball tournament. One of my childhood friends, Seinlay invited me onto his team. It was a 3v3 basketball tournament, we had 4 players on our team (one substitute) The other two kids were the twins, Milo and Linus. We made it to the finals but we lost by a couple points. After the tournament, we all go to Seinlay’s house to hangout. That’s when Milo and I started talking about Illmatic (another favorite album of mine) by Nas. We bonded over our love for hip hop. So later that week, I go to the twins house. We go to their basement and boom, there it is, heaven. Milo has a home studio that we use yet to this day. We formed a rap group: The Knights of the Round Turntable, cool I know right? So we tried for a year to make some music, it wasn’t that good but hey we all start somewhere. Eventually we grow apart, I quit rapping and we go on with our lives, didn’t quit writing raps though. Not until 10th grade Milo hits my line one day and tells me to get in the studio. I said why not, it was March 2021 we recorded about 3 unfinished demos, then I quit rapping once again. Not until the next year I finally record a full song “Exquisite Scripts Freestyle” (on soundcloud) and we were both like “wait a minute, this is pretty good” So Milo this whole time has been practicing his beat making skills and he started to make some fire beats. I never stopped writing so we both had a good skill set to say f*ck it let’s do it. BoJack Carter was born. To make a long story short we’ve released 1 EP and 2 full length LPs (out now on all platforms) First time I ever performed was May 2023 at my highschool graduation in front of 1500 people and I rocked it! You can check the video on my YouTube. I had my first show november 2023 at the venue Your Moms House in Denver. Had over 15 shows in 2023, became a part of the hip hop community and been growing ever since. Milo and I will start our record label soon: CHEF Records. Why CHEF Records. Because we’re always cooking up new 5 star dishes, none of that fast food, pure michelin star food. I have an album titled “EVERYTHING” produced entirely by Milo Loughry dropping in the next 2 months! So Stay tuned for that. I also have a plethora of shows this year. 2025 is a big year for BoJack Carter! Follow me on all my socials @BoJack Carter. You’re bound to find me, google me!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience. Be patient, trust the process, you’re already ahead of a lot people. And that’s all the advice I’m gonna give cause like Snoop said “Da Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told”
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My performances. Rapping is a sport, you gotta practice, you don’t wanna end up like Allen. Since my first show in 2023, I’ve been practicing my breath control, stage presence and also crowd interaction. It’s important as an entertainer to know how to make the show as enjoyable and memorable as it can be. I’ve also been attending open mics around Denver like Beats Bodega created by FaceDefeat and hosted by She Who Won’t Be Named, Every thursday at the 715 Club. Very cool open mic, truly some hip hop shit. Open Mics are a great place to sharpen your swords. Also whenever I have a creativity block I just practice performing my songs.
