We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bolu Ak a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bolu, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
the simple fact that I have a genuine love and passion for making music so if i treat making beats or recording like I am playing video games, then it will become 2nd nature to the point where i will do it subconsciously.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Producer / Artist or “Prodist” as i call myself because I was a producer before i started making music music. I feel like the most exciting part about being able to create music is being able to bring whatever you have envisioned in your head into life with sound. And you can actually deliver a fresh unique style of music if you make your own beats because as a artist you know exactly what you want to hear in a beat before you rap on it.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Consistency is one of the most important qualities as a musician because your craft gets better the more you keep sharpening the knife. From when I started making beats seriously until now, it took me 3 years to get my 1st major placement and even after then i still make beats almost everyday. I feel like anybody can make a fire song or a fire beat but not everybody can consistently make fire music which is what made me stand out. It is also important to practice creativity for example i used to only know how to make trap beats until i started listening to melodic rap and ask myself how people are making stuff like that. I would have never known unless i tried for myself and eventually figured it out. The last most important quality ties into my last point which is the ability to take risks not only with the content but also with the packaging. Like putting yourself out there for anyone to judge because in order to get noticed I have to position myself in a way that what I make gets seen, There’s alot of ways to do it but what makes the most sense is to use the top 3 platforms you already use the most.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Confidence for me because i used to care about what other people thought but until i realized its a waste of time. The world is a lot bigger than personal beliefs so if I genuinely enjoy hearing my own voice and sound then who knows who else would kind of thing, just like with any other artist. & then on top of that when i play beats and songs for people they would always ask me how i made it so that made me feel like maybe I can start doing beat breakdowns and show exactly how certain sounds are made in case anybody wants to learn something. So once you get out of your head & act, you’ll start to see some results
