We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Boris Abramov a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Boris with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that work ethic is something you build from an early age – it is important to develop healthy habits early on in order to be able to apply and adapt to the constant changes of your career!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m currently on the faculty of Belmont University teaching classical violin and chamber music while maintaining an active performing career in the US and around the world – I perform as a soloist, chamber & orchestral musician as well as recording session musician – I enjoy the variety of my activities as a musician which allows me to experience different styles and most importantly, different music!
This coming year will bring lots of exciting concerts and recordings, performing with some wonderful ensembles across the country – for more information, you could find exciting news on my website – BORISABRAMOV.COM
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe that the music business is constantly changing and involving – it is always very important to be ready!
It is very important for a musician today to be versatile, and gain as much experience as possible – particularly early on in their careers!
Practicing is obviously important, and the constant need to improve your skills is essential for any professional, but equally important is to be aware and constantly look for opportunities to grow!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I get overwhelmed often – which is not surprising considering the amount of work that comes my way!
I believe that the best way to address this is to be very deliberate about priorities and your schedule – it is so important to plan time for rest, and not sacrifice your basic needs which at times I tend to neglect!
Being overwhelmed is normal, which is helpful to remind yourself from time to time – it actually helps!
