We were lucky to catch up with Brady Gregurich recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brady, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Reading has helped a lot with creativity. I enjoy biographies and my wife and I read a passage every day from various meditation books to bring some positivity into every day. That also helps with kick starting new fun ideas to hopefully turn into jokes that people will enjoy.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I began doing stand up comedy 10 years ago when I did my first 3 minute open mic in Minneapolis. I was lucky enough to perform with some wonderful comedians over the next several months following my first open mic that helped introducing me to show bookers and getting on shows to perform. Standup comedy has brought me so much happiness and fulfillment. Hearing an entire room laugh at something you said is such a great feeling that you are bringing some joy into the world. I’ve also been able to run an annual comedy show fundraiser to benefit families who are battling cancer. I started organizing Chuckles for Charity in honor of my niece Jayden who passed away from cancer in 2009 so being able to honor her memory and help people going through what she went through has been the most rewarding thing I could’ve ever hoped to do with comedy.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say being able to take advice and listen, being relatable and always trying to have fun and be a good person were important skills for me since I started doing standup comedy. Any new comedian starting out I would say always try and be a good person and kind to the other comedians you are performing with, the folks booking you on the show, the venue and their staff and the crowd. Being kind will hopefully get you remembered in the right way rather than people remembering you if you’re not kind.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday. My wife Addy and I read a passage every day together and it always started the day on a positive note for us, which puts you in the right frame of mind to tackle the day and try and be creative and write. One of my favorite quotes from the book was by Marcus Aurelius:
Love the humble art you have learned, and take rest in it.
