Meet Brandon Callies from Deadwind Howler

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Callies a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Brandon, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
A few of us in the band grew up following the punk DIY scene. We’ve all been playing music for sometime, and the only way to get ahead is to work hard. There is a lot music out there, so staying driven hopefully gets you to the top of that pile.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Deadwind Howler is a band based out of the DFW area. We play a folk fueled rock n roll brand of americana music. The band started out as a reason for some old friends to get together and play music. We’d talked about it for years and finally made it happen. Deadwind Howler is very musch a side project for all of us, but it’s something that we love doing and that we are proud of. We’ve recently released our first EP on through Hand Drawn Records, and it was a blast to make.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance, resilience, and DIY ethic. None of this is easy, and you can’t rely on anyone to help you, especially if you are unwilling to help yourself. Work hard, be humble, and keep you gratitude higher than your expectations.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I think all of us in the band are able to realize that we are fairly lucky to be able to express ourselves through music. When that perspective is kept, it makes it a little harder to feel too overwhelmed. We do this because we love it. Stress has no place in a labor of love.
