Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandon Hawkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brandon, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I truly think my confidence and self esteem developed at an early age, through sports. I had several good people coaching me and some outstanding teammates, and it helped me to know I wasn’t alone in the world.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a teacher, baseball player, baseball coach and a food critic. They were called food critics before “foodie” or “influencer” became a thing..
I am a teacher and it’s a great career. I’ve had a lot of great support and met some wonderful people.
I got to play baseball until I was 38, but, I started coaching when I was 21, and learned a lot about myself and people, I’m still coaching. I have a baseball business, where we have competitive teams and individual/group lessons. I love baseball and one thing I love, almost as much as baseball,
is food.
Food brings people together and there’s always something new, different and exciting, whether it’s an old recipe, new recipe or some wild food that’s out.
Ever since I started using social media, I started posting food pics of dishes made by my family, or places we’d eat out at.
One day, I decided to film a mini episode of me walking up to a local spot, trying a couple gourmet donuts and a coffee.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Man, looking back, the three things that were most impactful, on my journey were my family’s emphasis on hard work, treating people well and doing things you love to do.
The advice I’d give to folks who are early in their journey is to keep at it. If you want it, it doesn’t matter what the doubters think, because they’re not going to be in your corner, anyways. You have to focus on the end game and your happiness.
Also, you’re going have ideas that you think are brilliant, but don’t work as well as you thought. Scratch them and move on. Learn from others who are in the same field and put your own twist on it.
Having specific goals and timelines are important, You need to see where you’re going, but need to know that the journey is going to have detours, speed bumps and delays. It’s okay.. just keep moving forward.
And, as long as you love doing it, just keep doing it!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I start feeling overwhelmed, I have to step away and relax, refocus and regroup. I schedule days off and put them in my phone, as reminders. This way I know when I’m off, I pick activities that I love to do or I can do that allow me to get away from working. That way, when I step back into a project, I’m able to dive in, with the energy and excitement that got me to start, originally.
