We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandon Henderson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandon below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I have to credit, in all honesty, the roots of my work ethic to a journey of humble beginnings. As a descendant country-kid from Durham, North Carolina — my mother was born to a family of educators, & my father’s from a line of 12 children that grew up on farmland in a small town. Getting ahead in life wasn’t always an easy task. I learned very early on that talent & intelligence without a healthy dose of consistently would only take me but so far in life.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My life & aspirations to a large extent surround the art of filmmaking. A multi-hyphenate is what my journey would be often categorized as. I’m a child of the 90’s era, where I discovered the works of Mario Van Peebles, Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, & Spike Lee — creatives who not only saw themselves as developers, but also influential talents that had the ability to use their likeness on screen. Growing up watching their productions, I often asked myself if I too could attain a career on that level? It’s amazing what a bit of inspiration can do for a person. As an English major from Morehouse College, I was bestowed a special opportunity to develop my talents around some of the brightest young artists of my generation. Like most African American kids, I had dreams, as a student-athlete of playing basketball & becoming the next LeBron James or Stephen Curry. But God had different plans for me. My foundational skillset was truly grounded in the realms of liberal arts. As I had that awakening during my college years, I’ve been pursuing a life in entertainment ever since.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
From my experiences, I’d say one of the most impactful qualities I’ve attained has been my interest for history. Often times, I speak with my generation of millennials & there’s a lacking for the knowledge of artistry & world happenings that date back further than one life cycle before us. We lose sight of the relative lines of connectivity that history presents, & how much that affects the future world we’re creating. I encourage everyone in this journey of life to study those who came before & the factors that have allowed our present day to be what it is. Be graceful with yourself in this journey of life — however committed to being authentically present. We’re all on a difficult course to achieve our wildest dreams no matter how small or large the task. A tunneled focus is a vital component to that formula of success, & the vastly changing fortunes of time deserve it.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I’m a really big fan of the work Paulo Coelho did with The Alchemist. It’s a Bold Journey in itself, keying in on the omens that are presented along the course & discovery of life; how each one can align us to our greater purpose. Truly a must-read.
