We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon J. Larry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon J., so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose was always clear to me from a young age. Making films was all I can ever remember wanting to do. The difficult part was getting sidetracked and finding my way back to my first love for filmmaking.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a storyteller at heart; always has been, always will be. As far back into my childhood as he can remember, he has always loved movies and television. As I grew older, that love and interest in Hollywood morphed into a passion for the way that business and art intersect in the film and television industry.
I earned my duel major Bachelor’s degree from NYU Leonard N. Stern School of Business, focusing on the Business of Entertainment and Film Production, along with a M.F.A in Film Production from Full Sail University. Now, as a film/tv producer, I love to help others tell their stories too. I have helped produce and worked on over 3 dozen short films, web-series and other short form content.
Currently has his first 2 feature films in development with plans to shoot during the summer and fall of 2025. Furthermore, I am looking to add even more to my development slate for 2026 and beyond.
Outside of film I’m an avid runner and traveler. I’ll take any chance I get to hop on a flight and visit another country. I’m finishing up my first novel in a trilogy and am hopeful to get it published soon. Like I said, I’m a storyteller at heart.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Collaboration – Films, business, and life are all collaborative projects. No matter what it may be, knowing how to effectively communicate and work with others is a necessary part in any endeavor.
Desire for Self Improvement – The whole point of life is to become better than you used to be. That drive to constantly be improving myself has been key to me reaching new heights.
Curiosity – Similar to self improvement. Never lose that childlike sense of curiosity that sparked your interest in the first place. That spark has led to every breakthrough ever and carries us all forward. The day you stop asking questions is the day you stop growing; so don’t ever let that curiosity die.
The biggest piece of advice I have for anybody is to not be afraid to do the thing you can’t get out of your head, even if doing so may seem out of your comfort zone. Growth lies outside of that zone, so if something makes you nervous, that’s a good sign that your taking a step forward.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I’m a believer in being well rounded, both personally and professionally. While you can definitely succeed by being so well honed in a singular craft, I find that the best overall high-achievers know a little bit about everything. That’s how I strive to be in my work. As a producer, it’s essential for me to know about a lot of different areas so that when a problem arises, I know enough about it to properly facilitate the solution. I don’t have to solve every problem by myself but I should at least know who or where to direct the problem to.
