Meet Brandon Johnson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandon Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandon below.

Brandon, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

This is a tough topic. It’s definitely a journey, and it’s actually something I coach people around in my business. I think a lot of people struggle with inner challenges like imposter syndrome, or fear of failure, or whatever else, and they wind up holding themselves back because they don’t know how to overcome it. The real truth is I never quite “overcame” imposter syndrome. I still feel it. What I learned, though, is you actually don’t have to overcome it. If you have imposter syndrome, you can keep it. The trick is learning how to not let it make or influence any of your real world decisions. I think of this like driving a car: I don’t have to banish my imposter syndrome from the car–it can ride with me. It just has to sit in the back seat or the trunk, and under no circumstances does it ever get to touch the steering wheel. So I don’t have to overcome imposter syndrome, I just had to learn how to operate in its presence…because I make the decisions–not it. Once I learned that, imposter syndrome stopped holding me back.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Most of us wind up job searching at some point, but pretty much no one is ever TAUGHT how to job search. There’s actually a lot of nuance to the job searching process, and most people know very little about it. It’s sort of a “swinging in the dark and hoping for the best” experience for people. Be Gallant Coaching changes that. I teach my clients how to start, then what to do after you start, then what to do after that, and so on and so forth. It’s job searching with a strategy, so you’re able to make sense of and skillfully navigate the whole process. The people I coach have been able to maximize their time and energy by making organized and informed decisions at every single step. When you do this well, you’re able to land the jobs you want, get paid and compensated the way you deserve (I’m talking 6-figures), and develop networking skills that can help you fasttrack your process and career.

I’m proud of that, especially because most of my clients are people of color. The people I work with tell me that I’ve impacted their lives in a major way, and that’s ultimately the goal: Helping people build more fulfilling lives so they can take care of themselves and their loved ones, while enjoying themselves along the way. It’s all about helping people reach their potential and feel content with themselves.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Really the three most important things have been focus, consistency, and follow-through. I think regardless of what you’re doing, these 3 things form the basis. And this is especially true if you’re an entrepreneur of any sort because it’s easy to get discouraged or tired or stuck. If you can focus, stay consistent, and keep following-through (even if just a little bit) over time, you’ll start to notice things will slowly improve.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Definitely. My collaborations have been some of the best things that have happened for me in my journey. There’s power in working with each other to build something, so I’m always interested in identifying new partners/collaborators! As a career coach, it’s cool to partner with others in the same sphere to put out webinars, workshops, etc., but it’s also really cool meeting people in different lanes and setting up referral partnerships. If anyone out there is interested in connecting, hit me up. I’m nice, I promise!
