We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Watson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative I would say.
Figuring out and learning my process to stay creative and not comparing myself to others can always be crippling to creating something fresh. I’ve learned that focus and discipline has been essential to staying creative and finishing projects.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
A Texas native, born and raised from San Antonio Tx independent pop recording artist Brandon Watson is a singer, song-writer, producer and musician. Often collaborating with others well-known in the music industry and having an affinity for the modern pop genre, Brandon’s richly tonal voice lends itself beautifully to the style. Brandon is also an accomplished musician, with vast experience playing drums, keys, and both electric and acoustic guitar. He currently resides in Florida with his new bride, Kashawn Watson, a popular podcaster.
“No matter how far any person may have gone, I believe nothing will be wasted. The music is more than a catchy vibe – it’s for now,” Watson says. “Everyone has had a defining moment in their life of highs and lows. I just want to be the person to give a role to articulate what we all feel and think about in my music.”
Brandon Watson’s most recent project gets personal with controversial debut single and short film called “Moment” a project that is an open invitation to start a healthy dialog to discuss the challenges about mental health awareness and overcoming some of life’s hardest obstacles
Accompanied with a compelling music video produced by The 1 Video Productions and an extensive promotion schedule, the catchy track uniquely attributes life to a highlight reel of “moments”, aiming to bring awareness to faith and mental health alike. Drawing on Watson’s lofty, euphonious voice accompanied by the electric guitar and rhythmic cadence, “Moment” tells his story of both personal and professional setbacks and successes.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have always been a music lover. As a kid I became obsessed with becoming a “student of the guitar” listening to influences like John Mayer, Eric Clapton and B.B King all of the greats really. My goal was always to become “listenable” with my playing. Fast forward 15+ years now creating my brand of being known for “just me & my guitar” it just made sense that I would create my own music that revolves around my guitar playing and style.
Looking back now on the process of creating multiple businesses, music artist, and a song-writer and all of the challenges that come along with that, it can definitely effect someone’s focus. I struggled with my focus like most millennials and Gen Z who can probably relate. Always multi-tasking and never really tackling and finishing “THE THING” or the product taught me that focus is the most powerful tool that I have and can control to speed up any process I put my mind, time and attention to.
Obstacles that had the potential to stand in my way along my journey have changed over time. Not having enough resources, the right relationships, or even as simple as time management taught me to create more, write more, organize more, create healthy daily habits that would set me up to win in the long run. Now when I see a challenge my perspective has change to seeing it as an opportunity for change not an obstacle to prevent anything.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My overall goal and mission and my passion is to create good content and talk about the struggles that we all face but have a hard time articulating or communicating those feelings or emotions. As a faith based music artist and song-writer. In all of my suspenseful, moody, or thrilling visuals and songs I tell a story. It’s either a story of something I have personally walked through or a story that someone I know that is close to me that as walked through.
I believe the more we acknowledge and try to understand that it doesn’t matter back ground, race, social class, or even religion starting the conversation about mental health and being life giving to someone that maybe challenged by it is where I feel to be the example and lead the charge with using my craft and content to give those that need a voice something to say.
The last 12 months have been very fruitful being a newlywed and just growing as a man and person.
As I mentioned previously before. The most powerful resources I wish I would have learned and knew earlier in my creative journey would be focus and discipline.
I never struggled with hard work or my work ethic. When I learned to focus in and block out all other distractions even things I would unintentionally do that were distractions I was able to double my effectiveness, productivity, and my influence.
STAY FOCUSED AND DISCIPLINED! Those are the areas I have grown in the past 12 months.
