Meet Brandon Wong

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandon Wong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Brandon, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

Definitely from growing up in our household, and from playing many different competitive sports. Our family worked hard and us kids learned from that. My dad went to work everyday at BC Tel and my mom took care the 3 of us. If mom was not busied she would be coordinating one of our teams. We also had our 2nd set of parents, my grandparents lived in the suite downstairs. My grandpa owned 2 different businesses and showed us how hard you have to work. My grandma was another excellent care giver and support for all of us. We received a lot of support from our extended family and my uncle Cary was a big help to our growth and who we are today.
Some recognition to all of them, is all 3 of us kids received college sports scholarships (Leanne- ACAC Hockey- Red Deer College, Jordan- NCAA DIV 1 Lacrosse- Bellarmine University, Brandon- NCAA DIV 1 Hockey- Quinnipiac University). And our 2 close cousins, also received sport scholarships.
Strongly suggest to register your kids in sports and have them learn through sport, coaches and parents/mentors.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Working at something you are passionate about is very rewarding. Sports and hockey has been a big part of my life and it is an awesome feeling to coach and give back to others, such as the youth. To see them smile, make their hilarious jokes and look up to us is a rewarding feeling.

Going on the 8th year in the coaching and consulting business, its been a journey, a lot of learning! Looking back at how small it started and how rapidly it grew. The need for coaching, skills coaching and leadership/mentorship in our community. It was special to have parents and some people that were in charge in the hockey community, be able to promote or encourage this new generational change.

In what I am doing today, it is who I am and what i had done as a young child, hockey player and professional player. I feel my super power is working and being around kids, and to sweeten this, they are playing hockey. I was always interactive with the fans, good with kids and loved giving back things I learned, and a more efficient way to become better or stronger.

The world should know that BW Hockey is a company, helping young families afford training and being able to play hockey. It is so expensive to do everything, whether you need a skating coach, skills coach or to do 2 or 3 teams. We want to provide what young players need young, put a lot of the money into training, meeting new local friends and competing within. Life skills and leadership is also encouraged by our coaches.

In January 2023, we partnered with the minor hockey association Victoria Admirals and brought the team to an international tournament in China. As we have one foot in globally we hope to continue expanding around the West Coast, in North America and Globally overseas. We are currently working on a 2nd trip to the China tournament and also may host a group from Korea in January.

We have faced many challenges as well and its taken lots of support to push through and we continue to educate the families, parents and players that do not know what is next for them. We wish to continue to grow and expand locally and internationally!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Some things quickly that come to mind are, being genuine and wanting to give back from past experiences, having people and social skills, and the ability to teach and coach are 3 skills that have played a major part in starting BW Hockey.
One of the biggest decisions was at the beginning is asking myself if I had the courage to start up a business with past experiences and what if i was worried of failure or if things got too big.
Through playing hockey, moving up through the levels, traveling the world and meeting new people, it sort of just all happened to put everything together and all the work had been done during the playing career. It is satisfying that it all worked out this way from 27 years of playing hockey and going through the journey that most try and go. To give back to the community and hockey world it is a nice feeling to mentor these young kids that look up to you.
Some advice from this experience, is to not be afraid to fail, and to have a vision what you want to do. Put your hard hat on and connect with people you know and trust while meeting new people in the industry and network.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

Our ideal client we find is about the 99% in hockey, we believe all players must improve and develop over time. The 1% that are natural superstars or much ahead of their ages or group, they tend to play in the bigger cities, travel teams or with older ages/higher talent. They still need development! The 99% that must train, work hard and stay dedicated to catch the 1% talents. We enjoy working with the players that like or love hockey, committed to the sport and want to simply improve. Our leadership and mentorship can play a big role in their hockey journeys and their growth in life skills. Hockey can be played after finishing up your competitive career. You meet many new friends and business colleagues!
