We recently connected with Brandy Kemp and have shared our conversation below.
Brandy, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Where I Got My Work Ethic (and Why It Still Matters After 23 Years in Business)
When people ask me where I get my work ethic, the answer is simple, I come from a long line of independent women who didn’t have the option to slow down.
My grandmother? She was always working. I don’t remember her sitting still unless she was in her race car (as my grandfather called it) or taking a tiny bite to eat. My mother? She rarely missed a day of work, even during chemotherapy. She would get her treatment and head right back to her job. Not because anyone made her. Because that’s just who she was.
In my world, “taking off” was never a default setting. It was hustle, show up, follow through.
That last one, follow through, has shaped the way I run my business more than anything else. It’s not enough to dream big or start fast. You have to do what you say you’re going to do. That’s the part that builds trust, builds relationships, and honestly? Builds your brand.
Being a woman in business comes with its own kind of pressure. There’s this underlying current of “you better prove yourself,” and some days, it’s loud. But it’s also a fuel source. It keeps my work ethic sharp.
Even now, 23 years into owning a business, I’m still trying to figure out the balance. How to push hard without burning out. How to grow without losing my peace. But every day, I get up and give it everything I’ve got, not just because I want to succeed, but because I carry the legacy of women who never quit.
And I don’t plan to be the first.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a wife, a mother to two amazing grown daughters, and a devoted cat mom to Norman (who, if we’re being honest, runs the house). But professionally? I’m the owner of a marketing agency that feels more like a passion project than a job.
Kemp Marketing started from a personal need, I needed to market my own business better. What began as a solution for myself quickly grew into something so much bigger: helping other small businesses not just survive, but thrive.
What’s special about this work? I genuinely feel like I own a little piece of every business we work with. Their wins feel like my own. Their struggles? I carry those too. I’m the loudest cheerleader on the sidelines and sometimes the quiet strategist behind the scenes. Either way, I’m all in.
Right now, we’re working on something exciting and a little intimidating, developing our own AI tools to better serve our clients. It’s a challenge, no doubt. And honestly, I wish we had started sooner. But we’re catching up fast, and I truly believe there’s no better time than now.
This journey has never been about doing marketing the traditional way. It’s always been about real people, real businesses, and real connection. And we’re just getting started.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I had to narrow it down to three qualities that have had the biggest impact on my journey as a business owner, they’d be, relentless curiosity, dedication to continuous learning, and full immersion in both my craft and my clients’.
I’ve never been the kind of person who just learns the basics and calls it a day. I’m constantly asking questions, researching, experimenting, and figuring out new ways to do things. That curiosity has kept me on my toes and helped me stay relevant, even as marketing continues to change at lightning speed.
I study. I read. I take courses. I listen. I believe that staying a student is one of the most powerful things you can do in business. You can’t grow something if you’re not growing yourself. I don’t wait for someone to hand me the knowledge, I go get it.
It’s not enough for me to know my business, I take time to understand my client’s businesses as well. If my client owns a landscape company, I want to know how they design a yard. If they’re a painter, I want to understand their process. That level of care helps me market them authentically and with impact.
Advice for Those Just Starting Out
If you’re early in your journey, here’s what I’d say; Stay curious. Be a sponge. Don’t wait for perfection before you dive in. Read the manuals. Watch the videos. Listen to people smarter than you. And whatever you do, don’t get comfortable. If you’re standing still, your business probably is too.
This isn’t a one-and-done game. And the people who thrive are the ones who are willing to evolve with it.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Open to Collaboration? Always.
I’m always open to collaboration. Some of the best projects I’ve ever worked on came from the most unexpected partnerships. I don’t believe that industries have to match perfectly to work together. In fact, I think the magic often happens because they don’t.
Whether you’re in a completely different space or we share a similar audience, there’s always something we can learn from each other. Collaboration isn’t just about exposure, it’s about synergy, creativity, and growing stronger together.
