We recently connected with Brandy Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I fulfill a variety of roles for our three brands – Path To Publishing, PTP Press, and Path To Connections. The most exciting thing about the work I do is building the strategies that allow us to gain traction in the industry so we can increase our visibility and our impact. There’s a lot of hard work involved behind the scenes because we’re striving to break new ground but we remain committed to it because we know that the programs and the offers we’ve created can make a life-saving, history-shaping, world changing difference.
We’re all about empowering individuals to look at their lives in a whole new light and see the difference they can make. One of our projects is the B.E. S.E.E.N. program, helping people understand the origins of bias and develop the skills to overcome it. We’ve packaged that program with our award-winning novel, The Price We Pay, to serve as an illustration of the techniques we teach.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Of all the things I’ve learned in my lifetime, these three things have proven to be the most powerful: self-awareness, empathy, and how to connect with other people. Communication is part of all of those, but until you learn those three things, your communication doesn’t do much for you. You have to become aware of who you are as opposed to who society shapes you to be, learn to empathize with other people and put yourself in their shoes, and then use those two skills to form solid connections that you can leverage to accelerate your success and amplify your impact.
Self-awareness begins with asking yourself, “Why?” “Why did I make that choice? Why do I feel the way I do? Why did I react or respond the way I did?”
View other people as a mirror that’s in your life to help you understand something about yourself. If they irritate you, ask yourself why you find that irritating. What is it you don’t like about their behavior? Where are you exhibiting those same behaviors with others? That’ll help you start to understand people – and yourself – much better.
Connecting with other people comes when you learn to care about their outcomes more than you care about your own. It sounds counter-intuitive, but when you put the needs of others ahead of your own, you’ll find that the things you want begin to make your way to you without you having to fight for them. 80% of people in any given room are there to get something, not to give it. If you make yourself part of that rare 20% who are genuinely there to help people get what they want, it automatically draws the room to you. You stop having to work the room and the room begins to work its way to you.
