Meet Bre Ferguson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bre Ferguson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Bre, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Honestly, purpose found me. One thing that I wish I understood earlier in life is that purpose is a journey. Most of us are on a quest looking for something to define us or give us a meaning to life. For most of my life I didn’t think I had a “purpose” because I didn’t have a tangible talent in my eyes. Because of that, I searched for many things to define me like a job or organizations or other peoples opinion of me. When it came to work specifically, I thought that if I found a job with a certain title or had certain achievements then that would define my purpose. I was expecting to arrive at purpose.

When I was in my late 20s I started to question everything. I was in search of something a lot deeper than anything a job could provide. There was a void that nothing could fulfill so I began to look inside of myself. What was I good at naturally? What did I enjoy doing for free? The only thing I could ever come up with was speaking, serving and connecting with others. I love volunteering, storytelling, music, entertainment and even writing. Then I started putting myself in those environments.

I volunteered at an event and connected with someone who had a service organization. I shared a bit of my testimony with him to encourage him. One day he reached out to me stating that he had been wanting to start a bible study group and that he thought I should lead it. I was completely thrown off because I didn’t know why he thought I could do something like that. Ironically, I had an idea that I previously journaled about but never did anything with it because I didn’t understand it at the time. That’s when it clicked! We took that idea and it turned into a biweekly bible study for young adults in DFW. It was something that I fell in love with no matter how much it took to prepare for it. Then, God told me that it was time for that chapter to close. I was confused because I finally felt that I had “found” my purpose but I obeyed.

Shortly after, we experienced a pandemic that put us all in isolation. Then God reminded me about my past passion which was radio. I was a former radio personality before I moved to Dallas. It took some time to build my courage and confidence back but that’s how Let It B the Podcast was born. I wouldn’t box myself in and say that the podcast is my sole purpose but it’s definitely leading me in the right direction.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Now days, most people would associate me with my podcast Let It B the Podcast but I am evolving into so much more. I like to define myself as a creative with a servants heart. I host a bi-weekly podcast called Let It B the Podcast where we discuss everything from faith, lifestyle and the struggles of an everyday believer. I interview people that have inspired me along the journey and also those who are doing great things in the world around them. This is a transparent space where we share experiences and life lessons to help others on their journey.

I am most excited about this season of my life because the possibilities are endless. I am open to wherever the Lord leads me. Right now, I am focused on pouring into my business and expanding creatively. In addition to my podcast, I am looking forward to hosting bible studies and events in the near future and a few projects that you will have to stay tuned for. Outside of Let It B, I spend a lot of time serving with my church and others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey there are several things that have been impactful like reading, having the right community and most importantly developing my inner self. I believe the most impactful areas that helped me build my up inner self were; therapy, being openminded, and building my relationship with Christ. If I could give advice to anyone early in their journey, I would say start there.

One of the first areas that was the most impactful for me was to be open minded. In the beginning of my journey I thought things had to be a certain way. I was very one track minded but that’s not the way of life. There were many seasons in my journey that I could’ve gotten so much more out of if I had appreciated the part of that journey. I often found myself unsatisfied because it didn’t look how I thought it should. Now I know that all things that you experience are meant to teach and prepare you for the next door and opportunity. Don’t be afraid to serve in someone else’s journey. That’s how you grow and learn.

Another area I would say that was the most impactful was becoming self aware, therapy helped me with that. We don’t like to admit it but our comparison to others journey and success distracts us from our own. I had to learn who I was so that I didn’t look for other things to define me. Learning to accept myself for who I was and admitting that I didn’t know as much as I thought allowed me to evolve. Realizing that I am always exactly where I am meant to be is the freedom that I wish I had early on in my journey. Life is a marathon, not a race.

Finally, I would say that building my relationship with God and getting grounded in my faith is what carried me. Once I started to get into the Word and not just going to church but studying for myself helped me gain confidence. I don’t think that’s just meant for people in ministry but everyone. On this journey it can get really challenging. We see a lot of mental health talk these days and although therapy is one of the biggest blessings in my life I also needed faith. I believe those things work hand in hand.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Sometimes I just take a nap. I realize how important it is to prioritize myself especially since you can’t pour from an empty cup. That statement is such an important reminder to make sure I take time to do things that I enjoy. Being by the water helps me clear my head so sometimes I’ll go sit and journal or sometimes just sit in silence. Another thing is to make sure that I am moving my body. Exercise is also good for the mind and it’s where most of my creativity is born. I work out at least 5x a week. Therapy is also a something that really helps me. Sometimes we need to pause and reflect with someone else to help us stay in touch with ourselves. I also find time for the little things like reading, going to concerts and events and hanging out with friends. It’s all about balance, I try not to let business consume my life.
