Meet Bre Johnson

We were lucky to catch up with Bre Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Bre , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Throughout my nearly sixteen-year career in sales, I’ve often found myself as a minority—both as a young professional and as a woman. One of the most memorable instances was during a significant executive presentation early in my career in medical sales. At 25, I was led to the executive boardroom to present to the CFO, CIO, CMO, CNO, and VP of Patient Care—all male and significantly older. The surprise on their faces was palpable; they hadn’t expected me to be the one delivering a 45-minute presentation advocating for our solution.

Yes, I felt the weight of their initial perceptions, but I quickly tapped into my strengths: humor and connection. Within the first few minutes, the atmosphere shifted. This experience was a precursor to my career in both medical and tech industries, where I’ve consistently encountered and navigated similar situations.

I’ve learned to turn my differences into advantages. The element of surprise became my ally. I made it a point to be the most prepared person in the room, possessing a deep understanding of my customers’ businesses, often surpassing their own. This meticulous preparation and genuine connection allowed me to gain trust and be seen as a trusted advisor, ultimately leading to successful outcomes.

Being a different face in the room has been my breath of fresh air. I’ve embraced this uniqueness, seeing it not as a hurdle but as an opportunity. We are all dealt different hands in life, and while I might be a different suit, I focus on playing my cards strategically. Just like in any good card game, leveraging a wildcard can turn the tide in your favor.

In summary, my success in such environments has stemmed from embracing my differences, thoroughly preparing, and building authentic connections. These elements have consistently allowed me to exceed expectations and achieve my goals.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey, there are three qualities that have been particularly impactful: authenticity, genuineness, and confidence. These attributes have not only shaped my career in tech but have also been instrumental in launching and growing Full Bloom Mama.

Authenticity:
Being authentic means staying true to yourself, your values, and your vision. In tech and in business, I’ve found that authenticity fosters trust and builds strong, lasting relationships. When people see that you are genuine in your intentions and actions, they are more likely to support and collaborate with you. For those early in their journey, my advice is to take the time to understand your core values and let them guide your decisions and actions. Stay true to who you are, even when it’s tempting to conform to external expectations.

Genuineness:
Closely related to authenticity, genuineness is about being sincere and honest in all your interactions. This quality has helped me create meaningful connections with colleagues, clients, and the community. When you approach situations with a genuine heart, it resonates with others and fosters a positive environment. To develop this quality, focus on active listening and empathy. Truly listen to others’ perspectives and show that you value their input. This creates a foundation of mutual respect and trust.

Confidence:
Confidence is crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities that come your way. Early in my career, I faced rooms full of seasoned executives who didn’t expect much from a young woman. Confidence allowed me to turn those situations around, demonstrating my expertise and securing their trust. For those starting out, my advice is to build your confidence through preparation and continuous learning. Know your subject matter deeply, and don’t be afraid to voice your ideas and opinions. Confidence grows with experience, so seek opportunities to step out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself.

In essence, these three qualities—authenticity, genuineness, and confidence—have been the pillars of my journey. For those just beginning, embrace these qualities and let them guide you. Stay true to your values, be sincere in your interactions, and cultivate confidence through preparation and experience. These attributes will not only help you succeed but will also ensure that your journey is fulfilling and impactful.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

Yes RESOURCES.
Working a full-time job, a mom of 3 kids under 6, involved in many outside activities and trying to run my business can be overwhelming at times (not to mention my husband is also running two start-ups. I could use more time, funding, and of course more sleep = )
